Dealer vs. Cummins Shop
After my experience and others I have read about, I was wondering if any of yall know if we can take our trucks for any engine work to a cummins shop instead of the dealership? If the warranty work is still covered and so on? Any ones suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks
If you are talking about warranty work, I would think not. I would guess DC will only pay for work done in DC's shops....unless it is preauthorized through them to go to Cummins.
After your warranty it gone, im sure the diesel techs at Cummins would be glad to work on your truck at your expense.

Cummin auth. dealers will NOT do warranty repair on Dodge trucks. The engines are sold to D.C.with NO WARRANTY.Always been this way.In years past the times I subleted running problems (from a D.C.dealer to a factory Cummins store)they(Cummins)were NOT user friendy. They did NOT want to work on them even customer pay. That was several years ago at Cummins South in Atlanta. They charged a arm and a leg and it took several WEEKS and SEVERAL RECHECKS and SEVERAL TOW BILLS to get it repaired. Then D.C.told us NOT to sublet to a Cummins store any more.I can understand why.We told TECHS that IT WOULD be REPAIRED in house from then on PERIOD.Even GREEN it never took us WEEKS to fix one from then on.
As of just recently, Cummins will do no work whatsoever on 3rd gen common rail engines.
They will, if pushed, do work on 1st gen and 2nd gen engines, 12 valve, and VP44'd 24 valve engines.
They will do warranty work on late 24 valve engines, if referred by a Dodge Dealer that doesn't have a Diesel Tech (and approved by STAR), this point is almost null, as there isn't a whole lot of warranty left on late 2001's or 2002's.

Your right...cummins is not athorized to do DC warranty repairs. You best bet is to find a dealership with skill level 4 or 5 cummins certified techs. I have 2 of these techs in my shop and id out them up against any cummins tech on the market.
as far as dealing with cummins, Its like dealing with someone bothered by your asking for help. most cummins dealers here in the northeast are not helpfull at all and what they know about HPCR, you could put on the head of a pin...LOL

so i guess that means i'm stuck with a tech that says that it is normal for a diesel to knock, (which was found by a peterbuilt tech to be a bad injector), So the best statement I can come up with is happy happy, joy joy
(Same 'tech' said to run 1 gallon of GASOLINE in the tank to quiet the knock down!)

As big as Texas is, there should be a competent Dealership tech somewhere around you.

there is another in austin, only reason I have continued going to this one is if my truck has to have a sleepover they let me dive something off the lot till the next day, not a very good reason, but m wife and I share the truck and have three kids so.........
WhiteRam , Cummins tech were dealing with the HPCR long before any Dodge tech even knew what they were , we been dealing with ISB CR engine since 2001 , but I wont sit here and bad mouth any tech either Dodge or Cummins. there are good and bad in all of them. As far as working on Dodge ISB at Cummins, we will work on all 2002 and older Dodge P/U . and we do alot of them. and we help a lot of Dodge owners with the dreaded 53 Block by giving them policy, Cummins doesnt have to do that at all because Dodge bought every one of those engine with a warranty, as far as working on the 03 and newer. we are not working on them until we decide if the expenditure of a DRBIII is worth the expense. at our distributorship. Now there is a big difference from a Cummins Distributorship and a Cummins Dealer , a distributorship has to have certified tech in house , where a dealer only has to have certified tech for warranty work only on specific engine he is certified for and that dealer is watch over by the local distributorship.
I think you mean without ANY warranty.I just know (it was several years ago)that Cummins South near the Atlanta airport charged a outrageious amount and the ones we sent them were NEVER repaired first trip to them plus kept them weeks.I had a owner go there and he said they were a totaly rude bite my butt group. His was NOT warrantry. He was a boat dealer and just needed it repaired. After his we never sent one OUT for repair or suggested anything about them.
