Dealer says Injector?

Dealer called and said the possible reason for the lengthy cloud of white colored exhaust was due to a leaky # 5 injector. Noises heard were due to the excess fuel......Said it was dumping far too much fuel into the cylinder. Replacment part should be a 2 day wait.
Sound believable?
Why wouldnt the truck idle after the problem occured, but would idle rough when cranked 48hrs later?

Thanks,

Didn't you say that it would not crank over? Probably hydrolocked. Bent rod now. That is your noise and rough idle. Engine time. Can you say buyback boys and girls????

spots,
Do you honestly think the starter motor has enough torque to bend one of the con rods? Or is there more to this story than what is posted here?

I don't think he said that it won't crank. Just a rough idle.
Yes a bad injector will most definitly cause a rough idle.
Has your milage and power suffered?
As far as it idleing rough 48 hrs later I think that the problem with the over fueling injector might be more pronounced when the engine is cold. Just guessing.
Let us know if the dealer has it nailed.

It wouldnt crank while waiting for the tow truck. I went out and tried to crank it 2 days later and it idled rough. I didnt drive it afterwards, so power or fuel economy was not available.

What gen engine was this on ? you can get a knock from a bad injector that will sound mechanical and loud , it called a fueling knock , and usually if you do a temp check on the exh. manifold you have a hotter cyl.

Thanks,
Leaky injector could be due to a couple things.

Just plain leaky, or something stuck in the tip.

2nd option might explain why the problem was intermittent,
whatever was in there moved around and let more or less fuel out.
Letting the injector stick either open or closed.

Yes, it could result in the noise you heard.
Pop off pressures would be all messed up with either a stuck open or closed injector.

The "violent clicking" you heard kinda sounds like the normal sounds of a 2nd gen

well if it is a CR engine , I have had two in the last week with fuel knock and what a pain to find the injector , we use a program called insite and can do single cylinder cut out to try and find the injector , work great in old ISB and most every engine except the ISX and the ISBe , so we have to single out each cylinder with a plug on the common rail and isolate the cyl. injector , be careful cuz not any plug can be used because of the high injection press. in that rail , Cummins has a plug just for that troubleshooting procedure , another thing to remember is because of the common rail , if you loose connector to any injector your rail press. will drop for every injector and most times the engine will not run. so you will measure the return fuel line and if it is high , you will start plugging the common rail to each injector till you find the leaker.

LOL I have seen ISM push rods bent , which are short and fat bent from just barring the engine over with a 3\4 short rachet , the guy had the injector one's in the valve rollers , and the starter has lot more power then a short rachet .

push rods are one thing, con rods (especially the ones in this engine) are quite another.

well one time coupla years ago , I got a Cummins 855 pancake engine in a school bus that the school shop could not figure out why the engine would smoke after they had replaced the injector and it seemed to run ok , I spent a lot of time on it and finally pulled the head off then burning of injection on the piston did not match the next over cylinder , it had bent a rod and the piston was not reaching it full travel . but not broke off the piston cooling nozzle . weird eh
