Cummins upgrade?
Cummins upgrade?
Has anybody heard any rumors about changes to the 2004 version of the Cummins motor? Such as horsepower and/or torque increases? Any changes circulating the rumor-mill?
Re:Cummins upgrade?
I think Ferd gave themselves a swift kick between the legs all the 2003 Strokers being towed in. Why should Dodge/Cummins try to do it when them Ferd engineers do are so masochistic.<br><br>Cummins keeps improving torque, that's where performance is anyway. HP figures are for braggin only. Who drives their Diesel at 2900 RPM. Want more HP, measure it at 3200 RPM. Want less HP rate it at 2700 RPM. The CARB SO Cummins is rated 235 HP @ 2700 RPM, the Federal SO Cummins is rated 250 HP @ 2900 RPM. Both versions have 460 lb-ft of torque. Between 1400 and 2700 RPM they have the equal torque and HP. Only above 2700 RPM do the two versions of SO differ in HP. The advertising extablishment has sold the public on the "Big Lie" that more HP is better. If you want to be able to work, a truck you need "more torque".<br><br>"Liers Figure, Figures Can Lie" ???
Re:Cummins upgrade?
I agree torq is better. I found out on my BMW motorcycle. It didn't have much HP but the tourq was a little under its HP rating. I didn't find any of my HD buddies could touch it off the line all the way through the 1/4 mile. The guys with the high HP engines couldn't believe I could beat them so easy with a stock engine. Thats when I figured it was better to have a lot of torq.
Re:Cummins upgrade?
I don't know the exact numbers and am too lazy to look it up, but I would be really surprised if the Harley didn't have more torque than the BMW. My Sportster has something like 77 ft-lb of torque but only 57 horsepower. My Honda maybe has 50 ft-lb but 130 horsepower. Acceleration-wise there is no comparison--my motorcycle with the most torque loses big time. There are other factors at work, such as weight, but torque in and of itself is not the final measure of an ability to do work. That is what the term 'horsepower' was derived to do--quantify an ability to do work.

Your right CP! The point I didn't make too clear was that the HP and Tourq were almost matched on the Beemer, and of course it is a light weight when compaired to the HD/FB I was speaking of, but the best thing about the bike was the ABS. and FI and anti dive front end etc. Too bad there are so many toys and so little money >
