what tranny upgrade will hold a 650hp cummins

buddy called me up today and took another tranny out of his 04 cummins, this will be number 5 in total ...

he has went threw 3 stock, one full blown BD, and one full blown suncoast.... to say the least he is getting a little upset with the tranny thing

will say that the suncoast lasted the longest with a month and a half... now is their a upgrade that will take the abuse and more...

with nitrous he will be over the 7 mark for sure and as of the other night was making low 12seconds with out nitrous, so any ideas what upgrade to try now

thanks for the replys

Call up Stefan at DTT. I've never heard of a single DTT tranny breaking ever. Heck, I know one guy who is putting 873hp through it with his 12v cummins and when they took it apart to rebuild it everything on the inside looked brand new.

i made a mistake, he went threw two BD trannys...

now we have been told the BD and DTT tranny upgrades are the same thing...it was a disgrunted employee that worked for dtt, then started, the BD tranny upgrade, same parts,tq converter...

maybe they are not the same, but always thought they were... i have talked to stefan a few times about the duramax twins, but always thought them and bd were in bed together, both stores are in the same town

I would call Van Haisley he builds the best trannys i know. he is the only one that i know of that can build a competitive pulling tranny. they have never blown one of there autos on the track. he uses an ATS torque converter and then modifies everything else.

I'm being DTT'ed (as we speek). Full billet / Flex Plate. Do your own research, I looked under every rock.

Everyone that has said anything bad about DTT has been Disappeared. Just kidding ...I think they make great trannies but you have to tell them exactly what you are going to use them for, how you plan to abuse them, what power level you are at and how big you are going. Without the proper info you are going to get less than you deserve. A tranny to hold 650hp reliably, operate efficiently and drive daily is gonna cost close to $10grand all costs considered unless you are planning on wrenching yourself, I otta know. Anyone who bought three of these trannies is an idiot...I kinda figure the friend chinced once, twice, thrice and now is paying the real cost of having power. If you are planning 50psi 4wd launches you had better be willing to pay alot up front in the tranny. I think Fred's Buddy should have gone manual and a big twin disc with a boosted hydraulic system. Nice to hear he has the power though. I wonder if an Allison 1000 would take all that abuse since its rated for 330hp and 650 tq. using all the defueling slipping tricks electronically available on stock tires. That is -10% margin of safety on 2006's. The 48re is now rated for 400hp 750tq on stock tires with torque management defueling only in place, a +20% margin of safety. Regardless of brand if you are gonna mod....go big on the tranny first. ks

That right there is the key to a good tranny. When I ordered just my valve body Stefan from DTT asked me all sorts of questions about my truck. What size tires, gears, power adders, cab configuration, bed length, how I like my eggs done, stuff like that. I'll have to say that he must have done it for a reason because my 47re is holding a comp and 100+hp injectors beautifully with just a valve body and the stock TC.

I don't know about the $10,000 price tag though. A fully optioned out DTT will run ya about $6500-7000 installed.

It seems Suncoast is what is holding all the big power... I have seen 850hp through a suncoast. Try HTS trannies out of Michigan.

That is quite the track record. Any trans is only going to be as good as the installer. Did the same shop put in the other 5 that blew?
