I've done lots of reading and I am still not sure if I should stay with the Donaldson ELF-7349 or change over to a dual flow style filter. I do not have a bypass system on my truck, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

the lf7317 was made for use on a very small kuboda engine on a refer. it is a baldwin replacement for the origional designed lf9028 fleetguard but because of patient infringement problems it is a pp substitute. here is pix of the baldwin bd7317, and fleetguard lf9028 with a used lf16035 in the middle. the cost of the baldwin is about $12 the fleetguard $45. this is a case of you get what you pay for. the white on the filters is the full flow part. and the tan on the baldwin paper pleats like in a fuel filter. the overall area is less than the lf16035 and the venturi is minimal. the fleetguard has an extremely unique filter media for the bypass portion and a good area of stratapore meda for the full flow. the venturi is a highley efficient design. bill riley furnished me the lf9028. the best way to go is with the bypass filter you do not change the bypass filter untill it no longer flows oil. that is the point it filters it's best.

 

I have been running the lf9028 for over 30k with no problems. According to the Fleetguard Tech I contacted it was designed for the 5.9 and has the same flow rate as the fl16035. They would not go so far to reccomend the fl9028 for our trucks because Dodge had not approved it but did say they saw no pdroblem with running it.

 

i agree but at $45 a filter the bypass filter setup is a lot cheaper. your 03 can go a lot further between oil changes that his 05 because he has in-cylinder egr. he needs the lf9028 or a good bypass. he can probabally get about 10 filter changes per 1 bypass filter change. that is a lot of money savings

 

The dual filter looks good but i don't think it is intended for use on our engines,because of there use. They holds 2.5 gal oil owners book gives a max of 7500 miles,less in Cal. this assumes a stock engine. The Kubota is small engine constant speed lower rpm probably as much oil. Extended length oil drain works for engine running hot a long time ie on highway and holds 10 -14 gal of oil. Extend oil use comes with sampling etc. not likely for everyone . I use 0-40 synthetic 16035 filter run for 7500-8000 miles in the summer much less in the winter. Have fast idle enabled but never idle to warm up, or idle at any short stops, close the shed door and were gone. Live in Manitoba where winter is really cold still same treatment. Back to the oil filter,how much do you really save leaving it in for long time, new engine is costly, power adders add more stress on the oil ,temp. carbon possible fuel. Laurie
