code p0148/intermittent symptoms

been having this code for a month or two now. seems to be cold weather related. when i plug truck in,in the morning i have no symptoms. if cold out and i do not plug truck in- truck runs crappy for a couple of miles. sometimes it will have no power and lug-will not go faster than 5 to 10 mph. truck will stall . restart truck and back to normal-no symptoms!!! tested the fca- can here it click and hum- no fuel leaks around truck or in engine bay, etc. fuel filter and fuel strainer have been changed twice- even dropped the tank- no debris-everything looks fine. i run a fass hpfp also- pump seems fine. no change in fuel mileage, etc. my buddy has plugged in the truck with his snap on scan tool (modus?)- but that has been no help except to clear the code ( could not find any info on fuel rail pressures, etc online). going to have him do an in flight test tomorrow morning. never take my truck to the dealer and i dont want to. anybody have this issue? figure it out??

here are some ideas from DealerConnect, hope this helps

Vehicle Issue Mil Light Is On. Code P0148 Is Setting. Verify Lift Pump Fuel Volume.;ECM is setting code p0148. Engine may lose power, stumble, or rattle. No wiring problems have been found. Diagnostic testing may misdiagnose a faulty ECM.
System or Component Hesitation / Sag / Stumble,Lack of Power / Sluggish,Loses Power,Clatter,Knock,Ping,Rattle,White Smoke;Customer Concern (No DTCs),DTC / Error Message;ECM,Malfunction Indicator Light / MIL / Check Engine Light;Yes - Intermittent,Yes - Continuously;Fuel Pressure Low,Fuel Volume Low
Recommendation It is possible that low fuel volume may set code p0148. Verify fuel volume. For test procedures refer to the 2003 Powertrain Diagnostic Manual Page 260. If fuel volume is ok monitor actual fuel rail pressure at key on engine off. Actual fuel rail pressure should be under 50psi at key on. If actual fuel rail pressure reads over 50psi or you see a pressure spike over 50psi check the fuel rail pressure sensor and circuit for bad connections.

Vehicle Issue Code P0148 Is Setting.;Following the test outlined in the powertrain manual, there is no 'click' noise heard from the FCA (Fuel Control Actuator).
System or Component DTC / Error Message;Injection Pump
Recommendation The FCA (Fuel Control Actuator) 'click' test is not completely accurate. An audible 'click' noise may or may not be heard. Continue on with the diagnostics. Monitor the fuel pressure SET point and the ACTUAL FUEL PRESSURE on the DRBIII®. Check the fuel supply flow volume. Check the injector return flow volume and the high pressure pump return flow volume. Check the Pressure Limiting Valve; On 2004 and newer trucks, actuate the FUEL PRESSURE OVERRIDE on the DRBIII® and check for any fuel flow from the PLV. On 2003 trucks, with the 9013 tool installed, perform several Wide Open Throttle stabs to at least 3000 rpm and check for any fuel flow from the PLV.

Vehicle Issue Hard start or no start. May have fault code P0148 , P0251.;Fuel is flowing freely through the Pressure Limiting Valve during the Fuel Pressure Override test and/or while cranking the engine (if the engine will not start).
System or Component Hard Start, Long Crank Time,Engine Cranks;14-003-06;Group 14 - Fuel System,Group 18 - Vehicle Performance / Driveability;Yes - Intermittent,Yes - Continuously;Fuel Pressure Low
Recommendation The Pressure Limiting Valve will need to be replaced. There is also an updated ECM which should also be replaced (unless the ECM had been replaced prior with part number 05191829AA / R5191829AA or newer) to prevent repeat PLV failures. The service kit for a revised ECM and a PLV is P/N 68003886AA

ok- buddy came down with his snap on solus.(he is not a diesel mechanic) did an in flight test. while truck was cold-got her up to 25 to 30 mph, hit the throttle a little bit and fuel pressure readings went from around 14,000 psi down to 2000 psi- truck stumble, loss power. repeated this same scenario a couple of times-truck did same thing-fuel pressure dropped down to 2,000 psi. at idle i am showing 5400 to 7000 psi.. solus says fca should be at 39% at idle, i am showing 33%. at 2100 rmp"s-fca showing 32% and fuel pressure was at 15,000 psi- when the solus said it should be at 10,500 psi. fca- clicked on and off (faintly) when tested and could hear it hum too. running a fass hpfp pump- i dont know if this would affect the readings. trying to figure this out-dont have the cash right now to take it to the dealer. any more ideas??? thanks
