code P 2121, 2122

I guess I am losing my throttle petal position sensor with those two codes showing. The truck will go to idle at times and the only way to get it to run normally again is to shut the key off, let the engine die, then restart it. It has always come back to normal, but doing what I do, one of these days it won't, and I'll probably be a long ways from home. I have the sensor ordered, should be in tomorrow or the next day. Pretty expensive sensor, $400+. Anyone else had this problem?

Got the part in today but the mechanic said the code was not a hard code and really didn't want to change parts just to be doing something. Part was $487. He took the connections apart and cleaned them, said one connection was dirty, maybe that was it. I'm going on a 900 mile run tommorow. Should find out if that was the problem. Hopefully it was.

I guess I'm going to have to change the part. It laid down on me once yesterday and again today. I pulled my edge box off this morning to see if that maybe was causing a problem, but it did the same. So far it has always gone back to normal when I shut the key off and restart the engine and most of the time the ck engine light is off after the truck cools off. (over night) Anyone have any ideas before I put a $487 part on it that might not be the problem.

Not sure if this applies to your year but there is quite a bit of guidance on this forum about "APPS reset". Do a search for it. Something about disconnecting the batteries, reconnecting the batteries, and then actuating the accelerator pedal to get the computer to re-learn how the go-pedal works. Maybe your sensor is slightly out of adjustment and the computer needs to re-learn full open and full closed.

OK, I was finally able to get the truck to the shop while it had the ck engine light was on and we were able to do all the checks that were needed. It turns out one of the pins in the throttle position sensor was loose. The book said to do continuity (sp) ck while the sensor was off the engine and unpluged. They found one of the pins was loose and would show to be OK every now and then.
The symtoms I had was a surge while I was accelerating then a dead throttle petal. It would always come back, but I would have a ck engine light along with the 2121 and 2122 code. The light would go off after a while, but the codes stayed. The truck would run normally down the road, the surge would only come at low speed in 1st or 2nd gear. Once it got going, everything was normal until it happened again.
I say it is fixed, the next few days will tell. If it doesn't happen again this week, I'll be able to say it is fixed. I hope so, I hate to throw high $ parts at a problem.

I am going to call it fixed. It has been three days and about 1700 miles with no problems so I'm going to say it was the throttle position sensor that was giving me the trouble. I'll ck back in if there are any more problems.

eb290,
Thanks for keeping us updated on your problem. It is always nice to 'finish the story' so that the rest of us guys get the full picture(including the fix).

Looks like you got it taken care of, but for future reference and for others.....there is a TSB reflash for the 03s that resets the APPS auto zero algorithm. Mine was doing something similar, yet not quite as severe, and at WOT versus your 1st and 2nd gear. The TSB knocked it right out. TSB # 18-027-03

It wouldn't affected me because of the loose pin, and I believe what you are talking about affects only trucks with automatic transmissions, I never had those codes.(P-2638 & P-0700) I'm a 6 speed, but the more information on the board about problems the better. Helps others to know what to look for if they have trouble.
