Clutches Aren't up to the task
Clutches Aren't up to the task
Well I found out today for sure, pulling around 24,000# behind the truck with the EZ on level 1 could slip the clutch pretty easy in 2nd gear.

Maybe they're just not up to the task of pulling more than the designed weight at more than the designed power?
Re:Clutches Aren't up to the task
You mean that they aren't designed to handle 40% more weight and 23% more weight then what they are designed to handle
What were they thinking.

I don't blame the truck or design, it is awsome not doubt about it. I figured that I would have to be looking for a different clutch soon.

Oh ya, the truck is rated for 23,000# gcvw, I figure I was right close to 32,000# had no scale close to check it for sure.

Re:Clutches Aren't up to the task
Ya, I was teasing you anyway. I know these trucks can handle a lot more than they were built to haul. Heck, look at the incredible power some guys are getting out of the engines. I wonder what the most weight is that someone's has actually pulled with a Ram. Not just moved, but pulled from point A to point B.
Re:Clutches Aren't up to the task
23K with the 10.5" rear diff; 24K with the 11.5" rear diff. That is GCWR. If you are towing a 24000# trailer (load), you are in the FL60/FL70 Freightliner class loads. As a matter of fact, the FL50/60/70 trucks (and their competitive counterparts) are not really tractors, and limited to about 32K# for towing (if you get the tractor conversion package). You have to go to a FL106 or bigger to be road tractor class, which will take you above the 32K limtiations. Our trucks are rated for 16K# towing, plus the truck weight. Mine truck with me in it weighs 8160#, so add 16K for a trailer, and that puts me at GCWR of 24160#. I would not recommend more than that on a regular basis unless you do some major mods to the vehicle, like bigger brakes (need bigger wheels), bigger drive shafts, bigger differentials (yes these have limits too), bigger clutch/flywheel, bigger master cylinder to operate the bigger brakes......
I could buy a used FL106 coming off 3 year lease for 35K, and make no mods.

Re:Clutches Aren't up to the task
I have a 2500 quad cab, short bed, short bed, 4x4, SO, 5-speed manual and 3.73 gears and I remember my GCWR being 19,100 lbs. Dodge's towing guide on their website is down right now otherwise I'd check it again for sure. My truck weighs 8,100 lbs. (GVWR 9k) loaded with my dogs, a hunting buddy and gear leaving me room for an 11k trailer. Fairly small compared to what I'm sure it can pull.

Yeah, you CAN run these trucks up at - and above - their tow ratings - the safety considerations to you and those next to you have already been covered, but ALSO be aware that you will undoubted pay a price in greatly accellerated driveline failures if you insist on doing that as a regular practice - and can expect about 60,000 miles or so, and then the $$$$ start adding up in a hurry.
Makes LOTS more sense to get the right rig to tow the load further down within its rating...
By Ford lovin', RVing bud thought HE could press his luck and tow rating with his '99 PS - and THIS is what it got HIM at 65,000 miles.... A roasted tranny and a $3200 relplacement bill... (AND the unpleasant joy of seeing ME haul his overloaded 33' trailer in with a hated DODGE! ;D ;D ;D

Re:Clutches Are up to the task for which they are rated.
You are SO RIGHT, Luke. Got the printed pages for SO output 2500 here in front of me. Thanks for keeping these guys straight.
