More on Fan Roar

I have talked about this subject before but need to ask again. With my AC or Defroster turned on, I get what sounds like a fan roar noise in the cab of the truck (windows up) when I take off from a stop. I think some of the trucks do this (some don’t) but my concern is the duration of the fan roar. It drowns out the diesel, gets louder as you accelerate and many times stays on until you hit 27 to 35mph and then stops. Sometimes it will go off at a lesser speed. My friend purchased the same truck as mine on the same day and his does not do that. This morning I went back to the service department of my dealer and got an appointment to look at it on Tuesday. I have 4500 miles and the last time I talked to the dealer they could not find anything wrong. Since then I have discovered the AC must be turned on for it to occur. I did not know that when at 1100 miles I had them check it. While at the dealer I drove a new truck just like mine with 13 miles on it and it did not do what mine does. The fan noise occurred (not as loud) from a stop but went out at 12 mph when the transmission made it first shift. That is about 2-3 seconds. Mine stays on 10-12 seconds when it occurs. Sometime it won’t come on at all. I would appreciate you sharing your experiences in this area? What is your truck doing?
Thanks
When i picked up my truck i had my wife with me On the way home i turned on the AC,at the first stop we came to when i took off it sounded like i had a small tornado under the hood. The wife looked at me and said WHAT IS THAT.I had already read the post about the fan roar so i knew what it was.Mine probably stays on through 2nd gear then shuts off

Mine does it too, though I don't think mine is as loud as what you're describing..then it goes off in 2 - 3 seconds after starting to move again.

Could you give me a speed associated with the fan noise stopping?

Keep the answers coming. I really appreciate it.

Does that mean when you shift out of the first gear that it goes off or later?

Re:More on Fan Roar

I don't have to shift, it will go off even in first gear after I start moving to get some airflow. If I stay in first for more than 4 or 5 seconds, it goes off.

Re:More on Fan Roar

Whether or not you have a "fan roar" depends on the ambient temperature under the hood. Since all of you live in the sunny south you are more likely to have "fan roar" when stopped than those of us who experience a true fall and winter. Today the temperature is struggling to reach 60 degs. I have as yet to hear my fan some 7 months and 12,000 miles after delivery. My 98 Ram 5.9L gasser sounded like an F-16 at speeds below 40 mph when the ambient temp reached 85 degs. It sure would turn heads at stoplights.

Yes I live in the south but purchased my truck in February. My fan was roaring as described when I had the defroster on and the outside temperature was 40 degrees.

Ken simple solution to the fan roar:

You said your buddy who bought on the same day does not have the roar. Invite him over for dinner and swap fans. Now yours should not roar. If it does then the computer is engaging the fan and possibly a software/hardware problem. Sounds to me like it is doing its job.

Re:More on Fan Roar

I haven't done any extensive testing to see when mine roars and when it doesn't. I do know that it often roars right after I start it if it's warm outside (engine cold). I can't believe it's necessary then.

Re:More on Fan Roar

KenR,,,,as someone mentioned it is due to underhood temp AND a/c or defrost on (a/c compressor comes on when defrogging)...it is an electronic fan (notice that the fan is mounted to the core support)...it is belt driven and electricaly controlled ( I like it cus it is a bigger fan than previous years and it is coooooool...pun intended)...my truck only does it in traffic with a/c on....and only for less than a minute or two!!...
my two cents

I paid closer attention to what mine was doing today. From a dead stop it starts about 20 MPH and stops at about 30.I can also hear it come on and off while crusing between 30 and 40

Re:More on Fan Roar

Thanks for all the input on this subject. Have been away with RV for the weekend so could not answer.

Went to dealer this morning with my description of the problem. They drove it and agreed I have a problem. They ordered a new fan drive and will start with that replacement to get to the bottom of the problem. The drive is controlled by the ECM. Part is on back order so will be a week or so until it is in.

If that fixes my problem I bet Dodge will have a mad rush on Fan Drive from others that have the same problem. I hope that this solves it.

Will let you know how it goes after it is replaced.

Mine does the same, but I don't see the problem. I drive a KME Fire truck & it does the same thing when the fan kicks in. I think it sounds kewl. At least you know your fan is working.

Re:More on Fan Roar

UPDATE: ;D ;D ;D Took truck in for Fan replacement yesterday. They replaced the Fan Clutch and Fan Blades. What a difference. I feel now that my truck acts as it should. That being, Fan noise is heard only when stopped at a traffic light for a long time (1 1/2 to 2 minutes) and then goes off by or near the first shift of the transmission (10-12mph). It is also quieter. Previously it would stay on anywhere from 27 to 32mph before stopping. Normal stops at a stop sign for a few seconds and then starting off does not produce any fan noise. Previously I got the noise at just about every stop. It appears to me that once the air starts flowing when you are moving, the fan will go off. I also notice that my temperature appears to be running about 5 degrees cooler. I am glad that I chased the problem and am pleased with the fix. Listed below is the written problem that I gave to my dealer as to how my truck was performing.

Fan Roar Problem

With my AC or Defroster turned on, I get what sounds like a fan roaring noise (not AC/heater blower motor) in the cab of the truck (windows up) when I take off from a stop. I realize that the fan is programmed to come on under certain conditions but my concern is the duration of the fan roar.

It drowns out the diesel noise, gets louder as you accelerate and many times stays on until you hit 27 to 32mph and then fades away.
Sometimes it stops roaring at a lesser speed.
The AC or defroster must be turned on for it to occur.
The roar is generally present for 10-15 seconds when it occurs, sometimes less, sometimes more, depending on vehicle speed.
The fan roars, as described, when the outside temperature is 40 degrees or 70 degrees.
If you travel at a set speed, about 28mph, the fan will roar continuously until you increase the speed.
The fan roars under a no-load condition (not towing an RV), with engine at normal or even below operating temperatures.
The fan roar is not always present with AC on.
It creates a distasteful driving experience.
A test drive of one of your new in stock diesels (same equipment) did not produce my results. This truck produced a slight fan noise that stopped just prior to 1st gear shift, 12mph.
My friend’s truck does not produce any fan noise that is heard in the cab of the truck.
Re:More on Fan Roar

You are fortunate, KenR, that your dealer's service believed you. Glad you have the fan roar fixed.

Too many dealers, 5-Star included, come from the "Show-Me State", (that's OK, my mother was raised in Waynesville, MO, too). It is as those service depts. have to have "proof beyond a shadow of a doubt" what is the problem.

When I stated this to a service adviser, he replied, "We believe you, we trust you". Unfortunately they just don't get it, their "actions speak louder than words", they don't trust anyone. Especially the people, customers, who ultimately pay their salaries. ??? ??? ???
