center steady bearing

hi all,can anyone tell me if the rubber block that surrounds the center steady bearing is supposed to allow movement of the bearing.mine has between 1/4 -3/8"movement when the driveshaft is moved by hand.and it appears like the rubber is tearing.thank you.

Yes, it's supposed to be able to move. I'm guessing that 1/4" is about right.

My son has a '01 that we just changed out. The rubber bushing had become fatigued and it was like being able to move the support bearing around in a tub of molasses.

It's not really a difficult job... Save for getting the old bearing off and pressing a new one in place. We ended up cutting the old one away with a die grinder as the old bearing was very stubborn. Pressing the new bearing in was a piece of cake.

The part you are referring is the hanger bearing and yes it is supposed to be like that. I had the dealer look at mine for what i thought was a worn out bearing but mechanic says that it is designed that way to allow for some movement in the driveshaft to allow it to center itself so there is no viberation, but i know what you mean, the rubber sure looks like it is torn and the driveshaft does have a lot of up and down movement. ( note to self, stop rolling around under truck looking for trouble)
