buy it or not???04 manual 6 speed
looking at a 2004 crew short box 4x2. 5.9 HO with 6 speed manual and 44,000 miles. I want to tow 12,000 pounds. Have no worries with anything but tranny and clutch. Any issues I should know about??? Driving about the same now but with auto and hate the automatic!!

Buy it!
You will get the NV tranny which is stouter (and heavier, iron case) than the later G56. Even if you have to replace the clutch, it'll be way cheaper than fixing an auto. Lots of help on this site about which replacement to choose.

yeah that NV5600 clutch will be stout, they can take a beating!!! My nephew has one in his 3500 4wd drw, we pull 12K+lbs all the time. nearly 160K and going strog with a bullydog programmer on tow mode no problems,,, om the other hand the dual mass POS on my truck went out @ 68K (warranty) and now w/48K on the replacement and it will slip if I hammer on it in the higher gears,,, Wont be long it will be replaced w a solid Flywheel South Bend Con OFE

The OE NV5600 clutches are pretty good. A buddy's 03 clutch went almost 150 k miles before needing replacement and he beat that truck pretty hard programmer injectors towing driving it like he stole it etc.

I bought my 04.5 new. I thought the clutch was out at 138k but I was wrong, it was gunk on the clutch fork not allowing the fork to fully release the clutch. I ended up replacing everything but the clutch would have run another 100k. It still had the grooves in the facing. I've pulled a skidsteer and GN with this truck since day one. The average weight is around 11k but I've taken 15k 800 miles to Ohio before, through the mountains with no issues on the stock clutch and the Smarty on SW5.
