Broke my NV5600 again

Hey guys,
Like the title states I tore up my 5600 again. It lasted 20,000 hard miles. I guess to many heavy loads and way to much power. I took the teeth off high gear again. I ether have to find some stronger gears or turn down the power when I'm loaded. And that wouldn't be much fun would it...
So my question is, who makes stronger gears then the stock ones for a NV5600. I'm glad that rebuilding the 5600 is easy. I had to pull the tranie this week anyway to change the clutch to put in the DD so the timing was perfect.
I've added a couple pic of the damaged gear.
See ya,
Topper

You gotta take it a little bit easy on her buddy.

You could go back down to stock tire size. Really cool topic with your pics btw.

Are you posting anywhere else?

I say keep the power and stop using OD when towing heavy.

If you weren't 4x4, I would say try a REAL MD trans.

I do not know of any aftermarket gears for the NV5600. I wonder if getting the replacement gears cryogenic treated would help? maybe you could call these guys. I know it is getting a lot more popular with high HP gassers.

Hey guys,
Everything that was suggested makes a lot of sense I know it would be a lot smarter to just tone things down a bit. I guess I'm just a big kid.
Matego,
That's exactly what I was thinking about. Thanks or the link!
See ya guys,
I'll keep ya posted

If you've been in there before, and maybe going back again, be absolutely sure you are getting all of the old gears and broken pieces out of there so reintroduction of particulate isn't causing you problems. I know you have checked idler wear patterns and case bosses for chances of the gear crawling away under a load, right? Just trying to help make sure you don't have a bad case or something else before you blame it on "shear brute force".

Thanks dun,
Yea we went through the case with a fine toothed comb. I didn't have the case x rayed or anything bu we did give it a GOOD look. I changed every bearing and went by the book as far as shimming to make sure that we had proper clearances and back lash. I also changed every syncro and detents.
There is always the chance that we screwed up but I really don't think so.
This is the second time around on this transmission and both times it was when I had a heavy load on the truck and a loaded to the max trailer.
I just need to stop screwing around when I got the old girl loaded up.
Ya know funny thing is my last truck went through 3 transmissions...
Do I see a pattern here???
See ya,

Topper, I know the temptation of towing cranked up is hard to resist. Just remember that the higher the gear, the weaker it is. Big trucks always tear up high gear, torque kills it. Get your gears frozen ant take it down a notch or 2 when towing. BTW, where are you getting your tranny parts? I was thinking of buying a synchro and bearing set since parts are getting harder to find.

Matego,
I hear ya but man it's just no fun... We do a lot of over the road trucks in our shop and your right high gear is the easiest to break. In the NV5600 6th is about a 1/4" thinner then the rest of the gears. Add that to the fact that it does the most work it isn't hard to see why I take out high gear.
Funny thing is the way that the clutch is slipping I didn't think I could hurt anything.
As far as where I get the parts I'll have to give ya that tomorrow. I have that info down at the shop.
If ya want you can give me a call.
My cell is (518) 225-0552
If I don't hear from ya I'll post it here tomorrow night.
See ya,

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
The harder you play, the higher the cost. One thought, all light duty (including 3500) are designed for top gear(6th) a economy gear and not a pulling gear. The lower speed you pull in 6th the harder gears are loads. perhaps not running in 6th below 70 MPH would significantlly improve situation. Believe you know the problem by three failure on another truck.

Hey guys,
Matgo I ordered my parts today from Driveline services out in Las vegas Nevada and I had them sent to Performance Cryogenics. They will have them Tuesday and I should have them back Thursday or Friday. Being Friday is the 4th I will probably get them back on Monday. Thanks for the great link!
I'll keep ya posted
