Boost max's out at 21 psi - normal?

With the truck in my sig, I never get above 21psi on the boost gauge, even with the Smarty on level 5.

Is this normal.

If not, how does one find leaks?

Perfectly normal. The '03 has a manual wastegate, where the newer 3rd gen trucks are electronic. This is why even with the Smarty you won't get more than 21 lbs of boost.

Try using Google or search on here for "boost elbow", which is a way to manually set your wastegate so you can get more boost .... just be careful how much boost you end up dialing in, and make sure you have a boost gauge.

Kris is correct. 21-24 psi normal for the '03-04 models. Get a adjustable boost elbow off of ebay that's preset to 32 psi. Anything higher than 32 psi super heats the little HE341 turbo with no additional gains other than killing the turbo.

Thanks for the quick replies. Found adjustable elbow.

If I set to 30-32 will it noticeably lower EGTs and increase power towing on hills?

Any downside?

If your working your turbo more, I think you'll see increased egt's

Yes, it will make a difference in EGTs with the additional boost. I cranked my Smarty down to level 1 when towing and my EGT's is less than 1000 degrees.

You could also just go to Home Depot and get a $.50 C-Clamp and put it on your wastegate hose. That's what I did. Does the same thing....
