Blown Engine In 07 Mega Cab

I have an opportunity to get an 07 Mega cab 4x4 Laramie for dirt cheap. Low km's. It has an auto transmission. 5.9L Engine is toast. What year of engine do I need to look for from an auto wreckers besides the obvious 2007! LOL will anything from 04.5 and up work?

Not 100% sure about the 04.5 but I do know the 05 and up were the same hp and torque.

Dont forget that 06 and up is the canbus system, not sure but that may play into it.

Doesn't matter, CAN is a communication protocol for the electronics.

Any 04.5+ engine will work fine, an 03-04 engine will also work just not quite as well.

The 06+ have slightly better valves and valve seats to help with the emissions generated EGT's, thats the only difference in the 600 series engines.

I recently found an 07 5.9 drop in through a friend of Piers for 7500. It had 64,000 kms on it. They are out there, just gotta look around.
I am working on something similar with an 04.5 3500 quad Laramie dually 4x4.

The valves and valve seats changed in 04.5, with the increased EGTs.. The change in 06 has to do with internal casting that is supposed to flow a little better, but I don't think it ever did what Cummins hoped.. at least not from the results I have seen and from talking with some engine builders.

Yes, but changes were also made during the MY06 production year to combat dropping seats and valve issues created by the emissions changes. What was supposed to work starting in 04.5 did not quite work as well as intended with the other electronics changes that were made.

Casting changes were an attempt to address the choke points that were inherent in the original designs. As you say, quantifiable effects are hard to measure.

http://www.fordcummins.com/ they used to have some real good prices on new engines and rebuilt crates. You have a core, but I don't know if they require a core.
