Black smoke observation

I notice that with my 07 5.9 that it puts out some good black smoke, not blinding my any means, when I tow a steep grade the FIRST time after having not towed for a week or so. Sometimes it leaves a haze on my white trailer in between washes. I can pull a grade and get smoke then pull another similar grade a few miles down the road and get nothing... Is my truck just blowing out the soot that has collected in the pipe and the CAT?

My 2007 5.9 liter ram 2500 does the same thing. i will let my dad use the truck sometimes, and he doesent get it above 2200rpm. lol and then when i drive it when he get back i hit it, black smoke comes pouring out. and a lil later, i hit it, absolutely nothing. i think it is a carbon build up of smoke in the CAT. so thats y im taking my CAT off soon =). let u know how it works out w/o CAT

My '06 is the same way. Sometimes it smokes, sometimes it doesn't. Usually it smokes more after driving easy for a while. It may also have something to do with the third injection event. From what I've read it fires only sometimes and very late in the combustion cycle.

Mine does it when i havent towed for awhile or have been taking it easy...is usually starts about when it hits 2500 rpm...seems about when the 3rd injection event kicks in

Same here, 70 mph cruise set for a few miles then mash it...lots of smoke for a second or two. I can mash it again soon after and nothing, dunno but it's kinda cool, makes me feel like I've got a big boy's truck!

I have learned to use the black smoke to my advantage when someone is following way to close. Nice to slow down just a bit and stomp it and leave them in the black smoke. Love it when the their windows are down or the white car looks like it just got washed. I believe they get the message to back off a little.
