belt squeel at shut down

Question belt squeel at shut down

The previous owner changed out the serpintine belt at 40K. He stated that the quick "chirp" at shut down is due to the super high compression of the motor stopping faster than the accessories....Therefore the belt chrip...


True or false?

True. It's hard to slow down all of that power. It just wants to keep going.

there is no way to stop it, i know if you turn the air off before turning the truck off its not as loud, but every diesel i ahve ever been in brand new, old whatever, has done it

It's a beautiful sound in its own unique way. After while you won't even notice it. Big thing is just stay on top of the condition of the belt and when it starts getting bad replace it. This will keep it to a minimal level and keep it from driving you nuts. JMO.

Chirp TSB

I believe there is a TSB on the chirping sound... check with your dealer for the repair:

TSB 09-004-06
Accessory Drive Belt Chirp At Shut Down

Symptom/Condition:
A chirping sound maybe heard coming from the accessory drive belt when the engine is
shut down.

Parts Required: Qty. Part No. Description
1 05183490AA Overrunning Clutch Pulley

Special Tools/Equipment Required:

8823 Generator Shaft Holder

Repair Procedure:

1. Disconnect and isolate both negative battery cables.
2. Remove the air cleaner box.
3. Loosen the accessory drive belt and disengage it from the generator.
4. Remove the generator.
5. Remove the drive pulley from the generator.
6. Install the new drive pulley, p/n 05183490AA, using toll number 8823 to hold the
generator shaft. Tighten the nut to 80 Nm (60 ft. lbs.)
7. Install the generator. Tighten the bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
8. Install the accessory drive belt.
9. Install the air cleaner box.
10. Connect the negative battery cables.

No cost.

If I remember right the new 01/07 trucks will have the over driving pully already. But the noise doesn't bother me I kinda like it

True, completely normal as others have stated. If the chirp bothers you when its time to replace get a gatorbelt. Problem solved
