Bad APPS and p2121 episode 4

So I'm one of the fortunate ones who have the APPS under the driver side battery... so the Timbo solution won't work on mine.

APPS #1 lasted 6 years and quit on vacation in Colorado
APPS #2 lasted 1 1/2 years
APPS #3 lasted 1 week and failed in Flagstaff
APPS #4 went 2 1/2 months

The darn things are $337 each (except for APPS #2 which was $656 at the dealer in Colorado) and a "dealer only" item. I've had it to dealerships twice and two techs and myself have traced the wiring harness and found no rubbed spots or grounds. No loose connectors, ECM is stock, truck has never seen a box or a programmer. It was tested (at different times, 1 1/2 years apart) and found it showing voltage at idle and the second time voltage at idle and only going to 93% at WOT. Unplugging the APPS causes voltage to go to zero. So no short, alas, bad APPS. Changing the APPS and clear the 2121 code and everything is as it should be for a short while.

Apparently the Mopar APPS isn't worth the box it comes in. There has to be a solution for this. Is anyone else having this much trouble or have a fix?

I wonder if the ECM isn't supplying it with enough volts or is giving it too much at times and that's what is killing them.

Timbo now sells the under battery APPS check their web site. I have the same set-up as you.

I contacted Timbo back in March, he's selling the same Mopar factory APPS that I've been going through. The price is cheaper but it's the same part.

I wish there was a better part to replace it like the auto trucks have.

I had quite a few strange electrical issues with my '03. I took one day and ran through ALL the ground wire points on the truck and cleaned the terminals. the bolts and the threads where there were body nuts and dielectric greased all of them. I ran an additional ground wire from the ECM besides the factory one. Haven't had an electrical issue since. I'm not sure that's the direct issue with your apps failures but these Dodge's corrode at those ground points and corrosion causes all kinds of resistance issues. It's worth a shot to check. The dealer techs just read meters most of the time and if there's intermitten voltage issues during body flex or driving they'll never discover it for you.

I haven't had any other electrical problems (except for the windshield wipers that do weird things) but I'll try going through the grounds... also saw that in the service manual for repair of intermittent conditions... who knows.

I know the APPS has 2 5v supply circuits, 2 signal circuits and 2 return circuits to/from the ECM. I'm hoping it's not the ECM, but if it fixes the problem... I've seen a number of ECMs replaced for weird problems in the fleet at work. I wonder what that will cost.

Clean the ground connection on the driver fender up near the firewall. Water gets there. As previously stated, the grounds will cause odd problems.

It's not a bad idea to clean all of the grounds...body, frame and engine. I had a slight miss and couldn't figure it out. Somebody said to check the grounds so I did and WHALA.....problem solved....HTH

Timbo only sells APPS's located in the engine bay for the earlier CR's. Your 6.7 is mounted on the accelerator pedal.

When I was having my problem I took all of them off and sanded/flied each connection and the put dielectric grease on all of them. Not one issue since.

Grounds

I'm having the same problem with my 03. Intermittent failure of the apps. P2121 & P2122 codes. New Timbo apps installed 9 months ago. Even sitting still the scanner shows the voltage varies. Rises as the pedal is pushed, then suddenly drops even when the pedal isn't let up. Next time it rises steadily and maintains. The strange thing is that after we had a weeklong cold spell with rain, well cold for Phoenix anyway, it stopped for 8 or 9 days. So the ground problem seems like a likely culprit. Is there any list or source for locating ALL the ground locations? I'm not mechanically inclined by nature so any help will be much appreciated.
