Air filter/smoke ??

Air filter/smoke ??
I replaced the Fleetgaurd with K&N drop in air filter.
With a new Fleetguard, the filter minder would pull 3/4 yellow in at WOT from 2nd gear. With the K&N, the filter minder doesn't move. I think I read that the K&N renders the filter guard useless. ??
Also, If I'm not imagining things, it doesn't smoke as bad when I throw the fuel to it.
Any ideas/comments?
