70 mph vibration patched for now

My 05 has 2700 mile's on it, with the drone vibration. The more I drove it the more dissapointed I was getting with it. They already replaced both drive shafts, and was scheduled to replace the transfer case monday. Untill I read on this forum somewhere about a guy putting 4" hose clamps on his drive shaft. IT WORKED! I lucked out and found the sweet spot the first time, stopped after about 20 miles and made one adjustment on the middle clamp. I cant believe it. It,s feels like a different truck. Hope this helps someone else.

Worthtex How did you know where to place them? Did you put them in the front middle and end of the drive shaft and then rotate them from there ? I don't have the vibe but I was just curious. I'm glad it fixed your problem I know that would drive me crazy!

I thought that fixed "vibration" not "drone"? So was yours virbrating if you were coasting in neutral at 70? I played with mine today...upon hitting neutral and rpms lowering, smooth.

I read it on here somewhere, going thru the archives of this forum. My dealer ship was more than willing to put me another transfer case in it after replacing both drive shafts. Man I hated the thought of that. I put all three 4" clamps dead center of the rear drive shaft about 3/8" apart, and lined up the screws. I lucked out and almost hit it perfect. It's a 40 mile drive home from work, so I had enough time to stop and rotate the center clamp about an 11/2" counter clock wise. I got in it this morning, to go to work thinking it's probably not really fixed, But FIXED IT IS! I still can't believe it. The droneing sounded like a twin engine airplane or twin engine anything, The vibration was in the steering wheel, and I couldnt put two metal objects in the dash pocket at the same time. The sound and the vibration are absolutely gone. I used 4" clamps, not a universal 3"to5" like the first store had. I bought 4, but three did it. I showed the dealership what I did, he said he was going to tell there area rep. I told him I hope DC comes up with something more permanent to fix it, but I am back to loving this Truck again. Hope this help,s.

Mine started at 70mph, then go out at about 75 or 76mph, I could go past 85mph, put it in nuetral, coast down and it would predictably come back in at the 76 mph range. When they put the second set of drive shafts in, it actually got worse, so they offered to put the transfercase in. They said they didnt know what it could be, but they would try transfer case next.

Now that you have found it, index your shafts and take them and have your shafts balanced, Idont know if you have someone in your area but if you call a speed shop they might point you in the right direction.

I have the same drone at 65 to 75,sounds like a prop driven airplane, the vibration is very slight.I was plannng to take the truck to a GM dealer to solve the problem when the 06's come out,but I'll sure try this, basically I like the truck. Some-one else posted the same fix. I don't understand why DC is so baffled by this drone.

I also fixed my drone w/ a hose clamp. Didn't take long to find the sweet spot.

Prior to that, I had a reputable drive shaft shop balance the shaft, but that didn't fix it. Now that the hose clamp has fixed it, I was going to bring it back to the shop and have him check the balance w/ and w/out the clamp. If it is more "out" with the clamp, then I think I can assume the hose clamp is covering for a non-driveshaft balance (something in the diff?,etc).

This is my worry. Replacing the shafts didn't help, and I suspect that the driveline shop won't find them out-of-balance. I think the hose clamps are helping to balance another component.

I also had the drone and vibration eliminated in my 04 with a single hose clamp located about six inches back from the front yoke on the rear drive shaft.
