4x4 issues? (grinding)
4x4 issues? (grinding)
42k miles. I have been getting a grinding sound, from what seems like the front end, only when in 4x4. It gets more noticable when slowing down for stops. It's not a horrible grinding sound, but noticable. I will probably take it to the shop.
For the first time, this morning it did not want to come out of 4x4. Backed into the garage in 4x4 on Friday, and it sat until today (Mon). After a few miles of shifting in and out of 4x4 and not working, (The 4x4 light went out, but I knew it was still in 4x4 because of the sound) I put it into neutral at a light, and that worked.
Can anyone tell me if the transfer case is covered under warranty? I know the hubs are not. I will check the fluids tonight. Anything else that I can check? I've only put 5k miles on this truck since I bought it. Daily driver, and no hauling yet. I know the previous owner drove a lot of mountain roads.

You don't say what the road surface conditions are but running 4x4 on dry surfaces will give you serious binding that will be most noticable at slow speeds. Your comment about using neutral to disengage 4x4 tends to support the binding theory. I always shove in the clutch to shift my T-case to relieve any pressure. Using neutral on an auto does the same thing.
The T-case should be covered on the drivetrain warranty.

i had a slight grinding noise in my front differential and i finally decided to look into it further it turned out it was the pinion bearing that was on its way out. i only had 100000 kms on the truck at the time. i found out by taking the front driveshaft off when installing my new transmission, there was execessive play in my pinion when i grabbed onto the end and moved it arounnd. just something to check out.
