Unhappy 48re troubles

Guys,
I have an 03, 3500. When the truck is put in reverse the go pedal gets stiff and requiers excessive pressure to move it. I have narrowed it down to the trans throttle valve. It only acts up when in reverse and warm, any ideas? I'm thinking it may be a valve-body problem

unhook the cable at the transmission and try it, if it moves free the problem is in the transmission. If it moves hard unhook it at the engine and see if it still moves hard, if it does not move hard the problem is with the cable.

Yes, it's in the trans, any ideas what would cause this symptom?

I've seen the levers get loose on the shaft and bind against the shifter lever/cable, but haven't ever seen anything in the trans cause it. It would have to be in the valve bodu. That lever hooks directly to a spoolvalve inside. Really nothin inside to come loose and cause problems. You'd have to take the pan off to see.

48re failure

I am new to this great site - Truck is currently at the Dealer having a new transmission installed, has 18,300 miles and the OD unit failed. Dealer replaced and it failed again within 2 weeks. Not sure if anyone else has experienced problems but Dodge told me that there have been some reported 48re failures? They may not be telling me the truth - I do use the tow/haul feature when towing my TT and keep the OD disengaged when towing anything, fluid was not burnt, clutch plates looked ok, thought they just might try a new valve body... they are making things right....I hope! Love the truck tows both camper and boat better than any other truck I have ever owned, it is nice to tow a 9k camper and get 13-14 mpg vice the 5-6mpg my big block suburban used to give me.

Hmmm....... the fluid coming back from the cooler actually lubes the OD. I wonder if the cooler is plugged? I missed that on a trans replacement once and the trans lasted about 200 miles! Ooops! Glad its under warranty for ya! As for the original poster get jojoe, have you found anything to report?!

Thanks for the feedback guys, I won’t be able to tear into this thing until November, I’m in the Air Force watching to border N Korean border now however, I want a plan of action ready for when I return. Looks like I'll be pulling the V-body

48re failure

Got truck back today, dealer put a rebuilt unit in and handed me warranty paperwork for 3yr/80k on the transmission. Everything seems fine, took her out on 95 ran hard, then returned to the Submarine Base and found a spot to test the 4-wheel drive, all checked out - we'll see how she tows this weekend.

Trans filter before cooler

Does anyone know of any inline filters that can be put on a 48RE to protect the cooler??

My 2003 had the same problem, they ended up replacing the valve body in the transmission. That was over 30k miles ago, and no problems now.

Not unless you use a stand alone pump to circulate the fluid, for filtering or cooling.

Are you referring to the stiff accelerator pedal in reverse? So a vale-body change was the cure…

Yes, intermittantly my pedal would be stiff in reverse. Only mashing the pedal to the floor, did it seem to move smoother. Excuse the rambling, but yes a change of valve body did cure the problem.

Why would you need a stand alone pump? Just put a inline filter in the line before the cooler.
