48re rebuild
48re rebuild
I'm finally convinced that my TC won't unlock (shuddering and high revs at stops and a hard "clunk" if I go from N or P to D or R). I'm going to limp it to a shop tomorrow and was wondering if any of you could tell me if at 185K you think that the thing should be completely rebuilt or just repaired. My profile is not very complete, It's a 2004.5 2500 quad cab 4x4 with the auto, no mods and a daily driver.
My first rebuild was at 149K, so i'd say go for it. Even if it's not a workhorse, I recommend you get a triple disc TC and some upgrades to the valve body, that way if you get hungry for more later on your tranny can take it.
Thanks for the advice. I'm probably only keep it for another 1 or 2 years and never pull anything to speak of though. Any advice as to what the price of a stock or slight upgrade rebuild should be?
I paid 3500$ at a shop here in Calgary, and I had problems 65k later. You would think a decent rebuild should last longer than stock. So make sure you discuss that. I think a good rebuild, with a triple disc TC and the proper upgrades without any corner cutting should run you about 4000$ Cdn. Also make sure they use the right fluid, this clown I went to used Dex 6 in ANY vehicle that came into his shop... yikes! ATF+4 Only for the 48re. Shop around, you can buy a HD tranny for 4-5 g's. That's what i'm doing next. No third rebuild. No way.

you do not need a triple disc tc get a good single and you will be fine upgraded vb billet anchor strut and band upgraded servos and new clutches laminated flexplate.thats pretty much it. if you want a lot more power get a billet input shaft i will be doing my own in the future. oh and of course get a drain plug you can put in your pan makes changing fluid way better.
i run ams oil in mine.

I heard that a good single will cut it, but i'm pulling a 14' dump trailer up to 10000 lbs all day every day, city stop and go. I still think a triple is better suited to that application, and even tho I have a drain plug on my tranny pan I drop the pan each time to change the filter. I run Mobil-1 ATF+4 and I change my fluid every 15000 kms. Small price to pay vs. a rebuild, and I don't have the know how, shop, or patience to even contemplate doing it myself. Billet shafts don't endure much strain from towing applications, when accelerating slowly and letting the torque do it's job. I usually crawl to about 40km/hr then get a heavier foot, depending on the load. But for mud bogging and racing when you need to throw down all the torque right quick, then ya billet shafts are key. For 1000$+ each I can't justify it for what I do.
