47re problems
47re problems
ive got an 03 dodge cummins with the 47re. recently i had the tranny filter and fluid changed. when they pulled the pan off there were some pieces of metal stuck to the magnet. they look like ring pieces. i have not had any tranny problems as of yet but im sure they are coming. the truck has 144,000 on it. would it be more feasible to rebuild the 47 or would it be possible to swap it out with a 48re? i plan on tuning the motor in the future so i need to have a somewhat stout transmission. i dont plan on drag racing or truck pulling, but a little more power is always fun.
I have 3 letters for you...... A T S You won't regret it. I believe they have a conversion for the 47 to the 48 re. Call and ask. Even if you are just towing or daily driving. I think it's the best there is. Firm but smooth shifts and solid when really into it. And the Valve body allows for lock up in both 1st and 2nd gears.
i have called around and looked on the net, and all i can say is they must be made out of gold.
any ideas on how much it would cost to rebuild my 47re? i would like to go a little better than stock but not break the bank.

You get what you pay for. I have driven lots of trucks with different torque converters, single disc and mulitple disc. Most shift extremely hard or have a 2nd-3rd gear flair. I still would pay for an ATS. I have been running an ATS converter and valve body for over 70k miles in my 99 and have had no problems what so ever. Still feels as tight as when it was new. Racing and towing. It is a matter of if you want to do it once, or do it again and again. Yes it is worth gold if it won't break.
My advice is to call all the big boys and get their prices then look around for a local rebuilder that can come close. Forget the chain stores and high volume places as they usually don't even want to touch a diesel trans.
At last check GB Transmissions had the best price for a better than stock rebuild and they have a good record.

I have never felt an ATS trans that shifted extremely hard. Every one I have ever driven shifts firm but smooth. I suppose it could be built for racing but I doubt even then it would be as harsh as the ones I have driven that are not ATS built. Just my experience. P.S. Now that ATS has the 5 star it is even smoother than before with the triple lock. This is because the clutch pack helps to transfer torque to the wheels even before lock up, so there is less differential between the two.
