4.10 or 3.73 gears?

I have an '05 quad cab 4x4 with 4.10 gears. Would it be worth it change the gears to 3.73? I don't really tow much. It would cost me about $400 for each axle for the gears. How much work is it to change the gears?

Its A LOT of work and requires special tools. If you do it wrong the gears can fail.

Think it depends on what most consider "work" I can swap gears out in no time, however when it comes to back lash, depth, and all that, I'm clueless. I normally install and have a gear buddy help set up the rest.

Best bet is to find somebody wanting to trade. I have 3.73's and love the ratio, but when I go to 35" tires I might want 4.10's. I think for towing the 4.10's would be best, but I think the 3.73's would be better overall for empty and millage? I might go to 4.10's but am going to save the 3.73's incase I need to go back. I wish they had the 3rd member like the fords, nice quick and easy to change out.

4.10's a better gear for a truck in case you ever do need to tow heavy. It's alot easier to put on bigger tires for increasing the overall gear ratio.

If you swap them out let me know I might buy them from you. I need to go to 4.10 if I lift my truck

My only issue is that at 75mph with the 3.73's I'm turning 2100-2200 rpm, if I went with 4.10's I'd be up around 2400-2500 and that's def. a lot of RPMs witht hat gear.

If I had the money I would have gotten the 4.10's and put 35's on when new, that would have been nice. Oh well, one day. I could always drop back down to the 31's when towing too

I got the 4.10's and love em with the 33's. Its brings the ratio to about 3.90 which is perfect. My 02 has the 4.10 with stock meats on it and you can feel the 4.10's on the highway. It doesnt glide like it 04 at 70mph

I have been debating a gear swap also. I want to go to 4.10 from 3.73. I know that the 4.10 ratio will pull a lot better but I guess my only hang up is that I do not know what effect it will have on my MPG's running empty. I get pretty decent mileage running empty down the highway or on my 22 mile commute to work. However, my MPG's take a severe hit if I even hook up to my little utility trailer or if I'm doing much stop and go in traffic. How much will it effect my mileage running empty down the highway?
I'm thinking that it could actually improve my in-town stop and go mileage.

I wish you were closer... I been thinking about going to 4:10. We could just swap axles and be done.

i have the 4.10s and went to TX in Nov and saw 21 MPG on both fill ups. But that was staying at 65 or slower and with about 500lbs in the bed. Around here with my normal commute and around town I see anywhere from 15-18mpg
