Question 3rd gen gauges?

Hey guys, I just picked up an 03 2500. I had a 98 VP 3500 i traded for the new one. I had a Fuel Pressure gauge to moniter the VP's input pressure. Its time for gauges on the new one now.

My question is, what is it that should be monitered on the fuel systems on our trucks with the CP3? Rail pressure? or standard pressure out of the lift pump?

Thanks again.

The CP3s aren't as sensitive to the fuel starving issues like the VPs were. The 03 -04.5s had the lift pump mounted on the filter housing and are known for going out. Only they wont take the injection pump with em. IMO a gauge for lift pump pressure is a good idea. most guy get a RP gauge after they start the mods.

So a fuel pressure gauge is a good idea then.

And a Rail pressure latrer on once mods have begun? Whats the typical readings on each supposed to be around?

When I had the stock lift pump(s) i saw around 9psi at idle and could bring it down to 1-0 psi with the boxes turned up. I replaced the pump twice before I got the Airdog. Now I see 19 at idle and can only bring it down to 14-15 psi.

Rail Pressure should be about 4,000 psi at idle, 15,000 psi interstate cruising, and max around 20- 24,000. These were observations on my truck, but my quad rp gauge was a little flakey at times.

BTW- you're going to love how easy it is to get power from these 3rd gens.

Sweet deal. Thanks. I loved my 2nd gen.

Didnt have much on it. Just an ez. Didnt know what i was missing till i drove a 04. I figured i had 250,00 on the old one so that was my excuse to get another one.

Whats the best power adders to start with? Im planning the muffler delete here next weekend and the intake after that. I dont want injectors right yet cause im wanting to be able to tune down when im towing.

Muffler delete and intake are a good start. Although you can find a used programmer or module for close to the same money and get more bang for your buck. Check the classifieds here for used Quad boxes. Usually pretty cheap for a 100 hp increase.I personally haven't used one ( i've used bullydog, smarty, mp8) but everyone seems to agree they do well on the 03-04s. Mines an 03 and the Smarty Jr and MP8 stack is pretty powerful ( just ask my clutch )
From the looks of your old truck in your sig, you already know the importance of gauges... same for this one. boost, egt, fuel, all important.

Didnt the older 3rd gen trucks have a recal or TSB to replace the lift pump with an in the tank pump, or was that just something Dodge was upgrading if you took it in for warrenty work on the lift pump? Either way look and see if you have one mounted to your fuel filter housing. If you do you might as well start things off with an Airdog or FASS set up.

That was my next question. On my 2nd gen, i had a banjo bolt that i swapped out on the outlet side of the filter housing to tap for the pressure gauge.

What is the best option on these trucks?

13MWZ- yeah dodge will replace the lift pump with one in the tank if the truck is still under warr. But no recall. I steered away from the intank, cause I had future plans for the truck and I knew that the intank would just come back out later so I skipped straight to the Airdog.

jmlcolorado- you can still get the tapped banjo bolts to read pressure on the filter housing. Genos garage also sells a billet lid for the filter housing that is tapped for guage installation. Cant go wrong either way. I've got a big line kit from my lift pump to CP3, I got a tapped barb fitting I spliced in before the CP3.

DieselManor, GenosGarage, VulcanPerformance, are just a few places to find gauges/fittings, pretty much all you need for install. I went through DieselManor and was very happy with their Isspro 3 gauge kit.

Heres that lid. http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo.asp?number=LT_FFCPP

Good Luck.

I have a 2006 3500 SWD Diesel and would like to put a gauage tree in the truck. I also pull a 5th wheel trailer and would like to know what type of gauages others use? Also any info you can provide on hooking up i.e transmission temp guage and others as I'm no mechanic would be great.

I have pulled the trailer for 1 year with no guages, but think they would help me to monitor the temps and other information to ensure the truck is running fine.

Thanks for all replys.
