30K trans service question and others
Probably good advice. Thanks. I think I'm just going to go as basic as possible with this. I only tow maybe 5-10% of my driving and never more than about 7k, so I think the fluid is probably pretty good as it is.
Well I'd rather not change it out, but after the warranty runs out or I can't stand it any longer, I'm gonna have to get some toys for it. I'm sure the 48RE won't like to for long
Again, just to clarify - you guys that have 48re's and just dropped the pan and changed the filter - how much approximately did you add when you refilled?

Wow I didn't think it would be nearly that much. Most have said 6-8 I thought. Arghh I might not have enough. Anyone else? How much have you added?
I'm currently halfway through the job and came up here to post and take a break.
I've drained and changed the transfer case fluid so that's done. It took about 2.5 quarts. I used the amsoil atf for the xfer case, I have to get rid of it somehow. Maybe I'll change that every 15k with the diffs. It was very dark and dirty looking compared to the fluid that came out of the trans.
I just removed the trans pan and filter. A few errant drips but most of the fluid made it's way into the collection pan. Not bad for the first time. I have to post that I'm so glad I took off the trans pan. There was a lot of crap in there, especially all around the magnet. Now everything is silver and shiny. I did curse Dodge at one point because there was a sharp metal burr on the edge of my trans pan that I didn't see, which made quick work of my nitrile gloves and my middle finger. At least I can raise my middle finger legitimately to show ppl

Thanks to all of those that helped, I'm all done. The sense of accomplishment was definitely worth it rather than shelling out $150! I measured the amount that I drained out, 6.5 quarts. I filled 5.5 in, shifted thru all the gears, put it in N, and took a reading. It was right at the MIN line - which is perfect according to the service manual. I then drove the truck around until it was up to full temp per the manual, threw her in neutral and waited, then tested. The level had risen a bit but not much. Added just about another quart and now I'm in the "OK" hatch mark area, just a hair below the MAX line. I'm a happy camper. Total cost - $50.
