2006 G56 clutch hydraulics upgrade

Here are some pictures of the new South Bend Clutch HYD-X-.750 replacement for the OEM clutch master/slave cylinder assembly.

Install was very easy. Waited until the sun went down, due to the heat index over 110 degrees. Just be careful when threading the slave from the engine bay down - the heat shielding on the new braided line to the slave cylinder and the battery terminal don't like each other for some reason.

The new SBC unit is adjustable at the pedal and comes prefilled/sealed. The only non unbolt/bolt up part of install is the new reservoir install.

The SBC unit comes with two self-tapping screws to mount to the firewall.

It was so easy a caveman (me) did it.

Improved the transmission/clutch feel and response 100%. It is better than new.

Thanks for the great pics. These are the first I've seen. I'm milking the stocker but it's inevitable.

it is a waist of time not to replace the dual mass flywheel on the g56. it damages the front bearing. all should use the sb conofe complete kit.

If you notice in the side by side pic, the guts of the OEM were cheap, broke and finally gave up the ghost. This upgrade was to keep it on the road and I didn't have to open up anything. Nor did I have break out the big checkbook for a full transmission upgrade.

Down the road there might be an actual transmission upgrade.

So, it was not a waste of time.

Thank you. I looked for pictures high and low of them and couldn't find any. Next best thing was to post my pictures to help others visualize.

Please note that the SBC reservior will only mount to one place without any fabrication of a bracket or interfering with other components for stock rigs.

Awesome pics!! thanks.

Your sig says stock G56. I assume you mean stock clutch and dual mass flywheel still? If so, how many miles on it?

I know a guy who just swapped his dmf out for the OFE at 74K. He's very pleased with the conversion. Says it shifts smoother than the stocker ever did. He lucked out with no damage to the tranny. Rear main was Kosher also. The truck towed quite a bit with stock power only.

Mine's got 35K now with a Smarty on low and 2000# on it's back the whole time. I'd do the OFE tomorrow if I had the buckeroos.

Entire truck is stock, including the G56 and just barely over 50,000 miles.

Itching for some modifications to everything, but not anything too expensive.

I have been running the Smarty Jr. on mine for over 20k miles now and no issues. I know others with a lot more miles and also no issues. I don't thing the dual mass has anything to do with it. There is no doubt the solid replacements are much better but the dual mass still hold up rather well.

A combination of weight and increased horsepower will cause the dual-mass to slip in 5th and 6th.

Just be sure the installer knows what he's doing. The dipstick that did mine closed up shop a month after my installation and he'd had to plug the trans in SIX times before he called South Bend to find out that a spacer had to be removed and discarded when the new flywheel goes on. I suspect he may have knocked a bearing slightly out of place and caused my noisy trans.

gadget the noise is normal the g56 design transmits engine noise more than any previous tranny. that was the reason they went to the dmf but they used a very poor design. the sb has a real pilot bearing also and will never give any trouble. all of our dmf's failed before 75,000 miles and one at 35,000 all had seep from the front seal. once you get to look at the dmf you will wonder how it made it that long. you need to run the g56 one quart over full to cool and lube the front bearing. if you wait to long to change out the dmf you will wallow out the front bearing housing. it is best if you change it before it go's out.
