1st oil change?

I stopped by the dealership for my first oil change @3000 miles. They said to run it up to 5000 before my first oil change because of the break in lubes in the factory oil . The owners manual says 7500.
What would you guys recommend?

I just did mine at 3000. They didn't say anything about break in lubes. I wanted to get the oil changed early because of the break in. Like all new engines there's metal shavings in the oil from the break in process. I'm just not going to switch to synthetic until 30,000.

I usually do my first oil change at 2500-3000. 2nd Oil change at 7500 and then every 7500 after that. Just like you are thinking.

I researched this to death when I bought my 05. I never read anything that said it was a bad idea to wait for 7,500. I waited, then sent a sample to Blackstone and they said everything was fine during break in.

Blackstone's TBN result stated I could have waited longer, but changing it sooner will speed up break in. They recommended I do my 2nd change after another 5K, which I did.

I always thought the factory oil was regular Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40. I've seen it posted on this site that it is the factory oil in the Cummins. Unless they have some "special" oil they add.

I was mostly concerned about metals being in the oil. So I ran some oil analysis at 3500 miles. While metals were elevated, there was no reason to change it. I resampled when I changed it at 7500 & feedback was to continue running it.

So...based on a one sample test, I would say there should be no issue in running oil to 7500 miles on a fresh engine.

I changed mine at 3400 the first time just for my own piece of mind. Second at 8500 and then at 13500. Now I am going to do it every 6500 miles and next oil change will get a sample tested just to see how everything is.

mooseman,

I changed mine at 1150 miles as I found out that the truck was built in August 2005 and I bought it in April 2006 so there was no way I would run 8 month old oil for 5,000 miles let alone any more then I did. I would of changed it sooner if I had noticed when it was made. I then changed it out at 3700 and then once more at 6700 miles. I went to 5w40 winter oil at 10350 and come summer when I go to full synthetic I will then go to 10K oil changes. Any way change the oil when you want too and not when anyone else thinks it should be changed.

I did my first at 2,500 and every 7,500 after that, did the rear end today for the first time at 21,000 mls - the truck is not much older than three months.
Very little towing, just alot of winshield time.
