1st Diesel, short driving trips.
I was worried about the short trips to, I only drive 15 min to work and when it was cold, temps would never rise above 140. Once I put on the Lund Cold-Front, by the time I am close to work the temps are usually close to 200 degrees. Much better peace of mind. You might want to try one or an equivelent.-Steve
I was looking at a fancy one by Alaska Tent and Awning

But I decided it isn't really cold here very often or very long, so I just use cardboard. The local PD often sets out used targets for recycling, precut to the perfect size, already with some holes to let a little air in. Cut a couple holes on one edge, and you can hang it between the radiator and intercooler with zip ties onto the upper support...

Quote: (Jeff, I dont know why your want to install snaps on the front of you truck when there are so many other options)
Dr Evil,
That's why I was looking at the Alaska Tent one, it installs under the hood.
I kind of like clean, factory look... but then tastes vary.

Dr. Evil,
I think they make both, and they seem heavy duty and high quality.
By the way, I was doing some reading on synthetic diesel oils on other threads... and found posts by you and Lightman particularly good reading.
I consider myself fairly well informed when it comes to motorcycles, and SH vs SJ, and so forth but am still getting up to speed on diesels. Anyhow, just wanted to say thanks for the good info.

My mother works for UPS and drives a diesel. She starts and stops (and shuts the engine off) about 100 times a day. Even the gas engines are lasting 400,000 miles under these conditions and the diesels are going much further than that. You are wasting your energy worrying about wearing out the cummins engine. Almost all of my driving is less than 15 min trips and am not worried at all.
The big difference between the UPS truck and the original poster's is that the UPS truck gets warm. A warm start hurts nothing. UPS is using the diesel in the as it is intended to be used--start it up, then use it all day.
Cold starts are bad for engines--not warm ones.
