'06 Starting issue... strange need advice please-

Today I shut my truck off for about 20 minutes to make a delivery and when I went to start it again it would not do anything at all. Power is fine so I thought maybe the starter so I checked all leads, tapped with a hammer, tried in neutral, jiggled the shifter, etc. and still nothing. Then I noticed the small yellow lead that runs with the wire loom from the positive terminal to the starter... it has a connector that mounts to the firewall. I disconnected it an put a paperclip inside, then touched it to the positive terminal with the key on and it fired right up... starter was fine. I shut it off and tried the key again and still nothing. I don't have a clue as to what is going on. I also checked the fuses and have no codes... anyone have an idea about this? I can start it every time with the clip so I can finish my route but it is a PITA. Thanks in advance for any suggestions-

The only thing I can think of is maybe the ignition switch although I wouldn't know how to diagnose that... any help is greatly welcomed-

sounds like you are providing power to the starter soleniod, and it is cranking.

i would put a multimeter on there, and trace back to find the +12v from the ignition. that 12v is what is missing, from the key switch.

google dodge body builder dot com for wiring.

Hey thanks for the reply. I will try that. I wonder if it is the switch will I have to replace the key, or have it reprogrammed? Thanks again-

Could that wire be going to your clutch switch or nuetral safety switch? Do you have a manual tranny? If so there is a switch on the clutch linkage that must be closed (clutch pedal down) to complete the circuit to the starter. Could have gone bad maybe? Good luck and let us know what you find.

Hey thanks but mines an auto. I checked the switch and it is fine. I had a friend turn the key while I listened under the hood and I am getting a clicking sound from the fuse box... I bet there is some sort of relay inside that is the issue. If I have to replace the whole thing that will be expensive. I thought about leaving the plug disconnected and putting in a push-button start with a fusible link to the yellow wire... might not be a bad idea as a theft deterrent anyway. I am getting ready to buy a mega cab and can just switch fuse panels with the current truck before I sell it and worry about it later... save some money for now if I can't figure it out and I don't think it will hurt anything-

If anyone else has any more input that will be great. Thanks for all the help so far-

There was an issue on the 06's where a wire would rub on the firewall and ground out. I believe it was the stater positive wire, anyhow after so many consecutive starts with excessive draw the TIPM won't allow a start. In the process it fries the TIPM.

Genarlly the first time it happens you can unplug the batteries for about 30 minutes, and if it fires back up then its a good indication that the TIPM needs to be replaced, and the starter wire repaired and moved.

Happened on my dads 06, left him stranded in BFMontana; and I have read about it on a few other 06's as well.

The dealership told my dad there was a TSB on it, i'll see if I can find it.

Hey thank you for the response. I am assuming the TIPM is the same thing as the fuse box? If by chance there is a TSB on it does that mean the dealership has some financial responsibility? I am out of warranty now though. Thanks again.

If you have a P0643 code, Disconnect the fan clutch 6-way connector and check if the engine will start. Fault code P0643 should not reset with the fan clutch disconnected. If the engine starts and runs with the fan clutch disconnected, replace the fan clutch assembly.

If you have code P1277 Starter Control Circuit Low will be in TIPM, disconnect the C102 connector. The code should go stored. This tells you that the T750 14 YL/GY wire to the starter is probably touching (grounded) the starter crash bracket just ahead of the starter on the left side of the engine. This can easily be viewed thru the L/F wheel well. Simply repair the wire and tie away from the bracket. Depending on the extent the TIPM is confused, will determine how we bring it back to life. Sometimes just erasing the DTC is required. Other times a complete system reset is needed, followed by resetting the TIPM. Replacement normally is not required. FYI . There has been some confusion that the P1277 code is being set due to issues with the customers trailer. This is not true. They are running 2 issues together. B166B, B166C, B166F, & B1670 all have to do with trailer tow circuits AND are caused by the customers trailer wiring.

Read TSB here may apply to your problem

Codes

OK I now have 2 codes:

1- P0521 Engine Oil Pressure Performance
2- P1740 TCC/OD SOL Performance

...after researching these don't think they are the culprit-

1- My pressure gauge did not come off of zero once when I started my truck several months ago... I turned the truck off and started it again and was fine.
2- I think pertains to the new trans build and the heavier TC.

I could not find any damage to wire at the bracket but was a great suggestion. Anything else please let me know.

Do you have a spare key? If so try it. If not, change the battery in your remote. When the battery goes down in the key the system doesn't recognize it and disarm the security mode so the truck will start. I've had the same thing with my 06 and have seen other posts talking about this.
