06 cummins engine question...

I am "thinking" of purchasing an 06 cummins.

Now heres the deal......I had an 04.5 cummins and I had nothing but injector problems with it. I had the truck 3 months and got tired of the truck being in the shop than on the road and got a BAD taste in my mouth for cummins so I traded it in on an 05 x-cab duramax. Now the duramax has NEVER been in the shop for one thing and I LOVE the power!( Granted.....I have an edge juice with att. and full straight exhaust.) Honestly I am sure I would miss the power of the duramax but, the only reason for the consideration of buying a dodge is for the megacab it is roomy and that is what i am after. And If your going to buy a dodge why wouldn't you get a cummins? wouldn't buy a ford for anything!!

Are all the bugs worked out?

Will the 06 trucks run better and take performance upgrades to at least run with a modded duramax? my 04.5 was modded and it couldn't touch a duramax!

I know I haven't posted up in a while but, for obvious reasons....I would be stoned to death!! **** duramax drivers.....But i am considering joining the family again!!

Sorry so lengthy!! Just concerned........

Sorry to hear about the problems you had with your 04.5. I honestly have heard of very few people with 04.5 thru 06 trucks having injector problems. The engines as far as I know are essentially the same. The 05 and 06 trucks come stock with an intank lift pump which seems to be holding up better than the engine mounted 03-04.5 lift pumps. You should have no problem building up an 04.5 or an 06 with enough power to keep up with your old duramax. Just make sure it has air/fuel supply and trans upgrades to handle it.

I have heard of duramax owners having more injector problems that Cummins owners. A friend of mine at work just had 2 replaced on his stock Dmax.

I think your 04.5 truck with the problems you experienced was the exception and certainly not the rule. Good luck with your 06!

MISS THE DURAMAX POWER????????????

I havent driven very many dmax, but I must admit on the road they do drive nice, and seem to be reasonably powered. But what happens to the dmax when they get hooked to a sled??? I pulled against 2 05 dmax one with edge, one with banks 6 guns and even the fords Wouped them.
sorry you had trouble with your 04 1/2 cummins, I had problums with injectors on a ford once and I have been a happy cummins owner ever since!! All I can say is my 06 has been flawless for all of its 220 miles

Thanks for the responses.....I am pretty sure I am going with the truck.

Ramrodd......The duramaxs' have have great power on the streets. And ONLY IF you put a power adder on it. In the bone stock form I am not impressed with it at all! But, I am not impressed with ANY diesel in bone stock form. Pullin sleds though?? Don't happen in my neck of the woods.

The ride.....better than ANY of the others....

I appreciate the comments!

I have had both the Dmax and the cummins.in my opinion the 06 Dodge in my sig. is better than the new dmax. I test drove 3 chevy's and 3 dodges before I settled on the new dodge. It rides better, and I like the roominess of the interior. it also is as quiet if not quiter than the chevy. also the patriot blue pearl coat ROCKS

Can't answer the Duramax vs Cummins power. I'm very happy with my Megacab. Fits rear facing babyseat no problem. My dogs now have lots of room without affecting my daughter. Pics are a little old.

it is strange how some trucks have problems after problems and others don't. my 04.5 just turned 42,000 miles. it has been to the dealer once- for the tsb on the door weather stripping.

I've owned an 03 chevy Duramax and now an 06 GMC, both 3500 4x4 crewcabs. The new 06 is equal to the 03 with the edge on level 2(tow tune). What you need to know about Duramax and allison combos is the have (TQM) torque control managment. Once a certain amount of hours are logged on the truck the torque increases to the actual rating of 650ft/lb at 1600rpm. When the trucks are new they have less torque, this is done as a safeguard to help break in the clutches of the allison. There is no one truck that is perfect for everyone, so you need to buy what you like. I would have gone Dodge if they had a mega cab with 8ft box because the truck is used for 80% towing with the family. Anyway you can't go wrong with either one. Older Dmax's had injector problems (2001-2003) but GM did warranty them for 200,000 miles because they knew they were a problem. Newer versions have less injector problems and are easier to repair. The injector problem should be fairly equal in all trucks running the Bosch high pressure system with a slighter greater chance of a problem in a Dmax because it runs two more injectors.

The new duramax still has injector problems. My buddy had one of his injector tips break off and fell into the cylinder. The gm rep told the tech to check the compression and it was within spec. My buddy is a little concerned were the broken tip ended up in the motor. Needless to say he is not a happy camper and is holding his breath on the durability of the motor.

Dodge is rumoured to have the same type of programming to allow for tranny and differential break in. I know I noticed a decent difference in power and mileage after roughly 10,000km. I have been told by several in the know that they suspect Dodge uses a sacrifical diode in the ECM that 'burns up' at a preset interaval (such as so many hours under a certain Calculated Load Value) and once it burns up it basically switches to a different program that allows full power. Several vehicle manufacturers use a similar sacrifical diode method to allow for break in before allowing full power...save on warranty claims that way! So long story short is that as long as you are test driving 2 similar trucks (either both have near zero K or both have 15k, etc) then there shouldn't be a difference in comparing power.

Goose2,
It is not the injector, it is the glow plug. GM had a recall for the (GPCM) glow plug control module. The glow plug control module would cycle
the glow plug or hold it on too long resulting in a tip falling into the cylinder. The issue has been addressed. On the diesel page only four trucks were actually effected, but it logged over 1200 posts so it seems worse then it actually was. The injectors aren't the problem, it was the new designed glow plug. I have 5500miles pulling 21800 combined with no problems. Most owners are in the same boat as me no issues.
