48RE Auto Service

I just got off the phone with a Dodge Dealer about servicing my 48RE auto and he said the only thing they do is flush for $180.00. I asked about the filter and bands oh we dont touch those.
I think the filter should be changed and adjusted what do you guys think.
I ask how much for service ect. was over 632.50 I will be doing it myself.I did my 15K for for about $200.0 in parts.

Are they still using the paper filters? Then absolutely change the filter. That's one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of the "flush".

I just had mine flushed a couple of weeks ago at 21k miles. They said DC was recommending they do that up to about 60k miles and at that point change the filter. I figured I have the receipt and they said any problems would be covered under warranty since I had them do it. The cost was $175 and I had a 10% off coupon. I stood there while they did it and the stuff that came out was a lot darker than I thought it would be compared to the new ATF+4 they were putting in.

Flush is the only way to go until 60k heavy work or 90k light work.Best thing to happen to a auto trans since its invention.Ban adjust and filter can wait for a LONG time.

The filters basically just stop the chunks anyways, hope you don't have many of those in there anyways. I think the only way a filter gets really plugged is on an overly long maintenance interval where debris is really starting to become prevalent in the trans oil. That said, I would definitely feel comfortable changing it at 60K intervals.

I do mine for about $100.00 including the Atf-4 and a new filter no flushing needed just let it drain for an hour or so.

....I bet the guy that I had to drop the valve body out of to reassemble the kickdown band linkage would disagree with that info. Nothing broke, band not in too bad of shape considering the amount it was out of adjustment. The anchor had fallen down on top of the valve body and the adjuster was obviously out a bit further than most. I find quite a few kickdown band incredibly loose from the factory. The adjustment is external so have it checked. I do like the flush, but I also recommend that the first service involve dropping the pan to check the l/r band adjustment, and adjust the kickdown band. Once you know they are spot on, you shouldn't have to worry about them for a very long time. Overkill or not, I service my trans every 30K.

Unless you are holding the truck with a crane from the front tow hooks, you aren't getting the fluid out of the converter.

I took mine to Certified transmission at 29,000 miles and when they dropped the pan they said the fluid looked fine and that it didn't need a flush. That would have been $175 (I think), but I got by for $70. Now at 31,000 I'm upgrading the TC and VB and am putting all new fluid in it anyway. Sure glad I didn't spend $175 the first time.

clutches are black thats a bad sign, when the fluid is darker.

For the 3/4 gallon that is held in the convertor I'm not worried as I change the fluid every 20k miles.
