Question When to service the 48RE

The service manager at my local dealer told me that I need to have my 48RE transmission in my 600 serviced at 50,000 miles. The book says 100,000 miles. Should I have it done as he suggest? He wants to change the fluid and check the bands. Truck has 50,500 miles and was one year old on 2/2/05.

Thanks

If you tow heavy with it I would. Schedule B in the book ( which is the heavy service schedule) I think says to do it at 50K. I am going to do it at 40k and switch to synthetic and a deep pan. But I have mods and tow!

100K ? I thought it was 30K. I would think it would be wasted at 100K.
I service mine about every 15K or so and swap service from flush one time to refill pan next time.

I think it is 30K like Pete said that is if you drive it.
It is cheap to have that done instead of the trans. rebuild.
Also I think the bands have to be adjusted at 30K
Iam having the dealer do mine so if he brake a band it his baby.

30 K is the recommended interval. I change all my drive line fluids at that time. (Xfer case, trans, and both diffs) Makes it easier.

I changed mine at 32,000miles (drop pan and refill). My magnet looked, and had the size of, a chocolate donut!! I'll be doing mine every 30K.

I'm goofing off instead of doing mine today... just no motivation. Next week. It will be at 20,000 miles - I towed a 5 ton RV for 4500 miles of the 20K.

Any tricks/tips/things to look out for? Bonehead things you're willing to admit to doing? I'm going to drop the pan, change the filter and replace the pan with an oversized replacement. I've got 3 gallons of ATF+4. Looks easy enough. I don't look forward to putting two gallons of oil down that little filler pipe...

I plan to have mine serviced at 30,000. Does that include adjusting the bands?

The service does include the band adjustment if you go to a dealer. Most Techs. will tell you the bands don't need adjustment, but you should have them check it anyway. The Tech. that did mine stated the only ones he has found out of adjustment were on trannys that were trashed.

Right out of my service manual:

drain and refill automatic transmission fluid - change filter and adjut bands. (46RE/47RE/48RE)
Under the maintenance table, it places an "X" under 30K, 60K, 90K, etc. Bottom line, change filter and trans fluid with band adjustment every 30K miles. From reading the band adjustment procedure, it appears to be a very easy process.

Also, change out the rear and front diff. fluid every 15K.

And yes, it even says oil/filter every 3K.

I tow quite frequently and also have daily, stop and go short trips empty so I plan on following the DRM religiously.
