04 555 engine problem

I'm having problems when accelerating and towing. The truck seems to run out of fuel, a lot of black smoke out the exhaust, and return to idle.

This problem started several months ago when I installed a bigger turbo and turned up the Smarty.

I returned the truck to pre-turbo settings/configuration and all was well. I've now experienced the same problem when I was towing a few weeks ago. It now happens with the truck returned to stock (no Smarty).

I need some thoughts. I can't tell if this is a sensor going bad, a bad CP3, or something else. I don't have any hard start problems. I just changed the oil and there was no sign of fuel contamination. I have 18 psi at the fuel filter (changed twice in the last 4000 miles)

Anyone seen this before? Is there a code scanner I could get to see what's going on? The truck isn't throwing any codes.

We were planning a family vacation next week with the camper. Family isn't happy.

I think my closest diesel shop is Llyod Mills at Mid Atlantic Diesel but he's 2 hours a way. I'm not sure the truck will make it.

I need help!

Have you cleaned/changed the air filter lately?
If you pouring black smoke, you have plenty of fuel...
Lack of air will cause excess smoke and low power...
A larger Turbo will smoke more till spooled up...

I'll look into that. My filter minder isn't in the red.

BINGO!!!

I'm so embarassed.

The minder wasn't red so I didn't think to look at the 100,000 mile filter I installed. I opened it up and it was sucked up into the top the of housing. I'm lucky that's where it stopped and it still sealed. You can clearly see the outline of the filter.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your advice.

Throw the stock filter in the garbage and get a CAI ! I did the S&B and never had that problem again. Mine was trying to suck the filter into the engine when pulling my 17,000lb 5ver. It was a mind boggler LOL !

People make fun of me for changing my filters so often, but I don't care. I just changed my air filter after 10K miles...it's cheap insurance for me.

I'll bet when you saw that the air filter was the problem you were so relieved that you wanted to kiss tryNto. It's OK to admit it. I'd feel the same way.

I was more thinking of his favorite beverage if I ever meet him. I'll leave the kissing stuff to the people in the Bay area.
