engine ping or detonation, new 555 auto
I too am concerned about what sounds like preignition or a pinging rattle superimposed on top of normal diesel sounds during acceleration. New (900 miles), driven like an old lady for first tank of fuel (17.8 mpg). Questions: a) is it possible for a CTD to preignite? b) is it possible for the light foot (under 2K rpm for 500 miles) to cause carbon buildup already? c) I have read lots of posts about failed injectors on low mileage CTDs; do I need to be concerned about it? The truck runs fine; my mechanical sensibilities tell me to keep my foot out of it until at least a few thousand miles. Should I start putting my foot in it to rid it of possible carbon buildup?

I believe the common rail engines is sensitive to the quality of fuel. Lower quality fuel tends to make my engine rattle more. A quick test is to add some Power Service diesel clean in the tank to see if it decreases the amount of noise. If it does it's the quality of the fuel your getting. I don't remember hearing to many injectors being replaced on the 555. I think the 600 is having more issues.
Also, don't baby the engine, it needs to be run and run hard. There's truth to the phrase "Drive it like you stole it".

Sounds like bad diesel most likely, which is a problem in many parts of the country.
Don't drive it easy. I notice that when I drive the **** out of it I get about 0.2 mpg worse than when I drive it easy. So what I do is I go easy on it until it warms up just because beating the **** out of any engine when cold, especially a turbo diesel, is bad for everything, but rest of the time I have my fun. The people in this town still haven't gotten used to seeing a big black turbo diesel truck driving sideways down the road.

Mine runs so smooth, however, since day 1 I have been using Standyne (spelling?) with mine. When on the highway I do not even hear the engine! It is even quieter than my gasser. When @ idle, it does sound like it is a diesel, it has the ordinary chug-a-chug little knock (if that is what you want to call it). But, I guess you can distinguish a true knock if you develop it.

I'm having 3 injectors replaced on Tuesday and I have 555 version. It's more of a knock is the way I would say it sounds. Much louder than before. Might be a hassle but have the Dodge guys look at it if you are concerned.
