Question 555 engine getting bad MPG

A lady at out barn has an 03 HO with the 305/555 engine in it. Automatic, 4x4 crew cab, longbed, every option included. She tows a 3 horse gooseneck with I think 20' of living quarters in it (+/-5'). Empty she gets 16 to the gallon and towing an empty trailer she gets 8-9. The truck has maybe 10K miles on it. She recently had the dealer install some injectors. Said it would give her more mileage. Well, $1700 later, it didn't help at all (didn't hurt though). I don't know what rear end gear she has (I'm gonna assume a 3.73 since it's an auto). You think she just needs to let the truck break in more or is there something wrong? Thanks for the help yall.

I have 22K on my 03 HO. Off the lot and up to about 10K miles I was avg.15-16mpg on paper. I was worried. At 10K miles did a 3K mile trip with 8100# 5ver. After that trip solo MPG went up to 18-19 mpg. With 22K miles on it now I avg. 21mpg on paper (solo) even reached 24mpg at 62 MPH on week (to conserve fuel $$$$). Towing avgs are 13-14 mpg. Seems to have topped out at this point. So i would say give the engine more work and miles hopefully will improve.

I know some women who wouldn't be able to achieve 11 mpg in a Volkswagon TDI with the way they drive.

And she let some dealer talk her into the high mileage "economy" injectors for the low low price of $1700? Probably a nice lady with more $$$ than sense. Probably has lotsa lead in the right foot too.

You never know, maybe 16 ain't bad.

i took mine from 16.1 empty to 18.5 empty just by puttin a K&N cone filter in place of the stock air box.

cut some holes in front of stock air box and put it back on, back down to 16.1

only ~6k miles, with one tow.
guess that justifies a CAI / FIPK of some sort.

I am at 8950 right now 1 small tow at 6K and cannot get above 15.6 on the computer, light foot, go like heck, or let the wife drive. I sure hope it gets better.

My results seem similar to GotCummins? (above).

My truck has 12,000KM (7,500 miles) on it. I get 16mpg in the city and 26mpg on the highway (empty) at 110km/h (65mph). Our gallon is 20% larger, so the converted numbers are 13mpg/21mpg (city/hwy) for US the gallon. One thing I noticed (on the highway, pulling empty) is the effect changing the speed from 110km/h to 120 km/h has on fuel mileage. I dropped from 26 mpg to 21 mpg (21 to 16.8 US Gal). If your friend is in a hurry, she's going to pay.

Towing a 2 horse aluminum bumper pull (trailer is 7'6" high) at 60MPH, I get 15mpg (CDN) = 12 mpg (US). I consider this pretty good.

I'm planning an 8 hour drive to Minneapolis next week to pick up a new 25.5' 2 horse gooseneck. I'll be interested to see what the fuel mileage is on he trip back with the new trailer.

So far I'm pretty happy with my purchase. I test drove a 2500 with a Hemi before I bought this truck. Highway towing an empty trailer showed about 5mpg at 60 mph. Yes ... That's 6 vs 21 (for the Cummins). Even though the Hemi wasn't broken in, I knew right then I wanted a Cummins.

Hey BB, depending on what you can get out of her, see if she'll pick me up some new injectors. Some EDM's might be nice.
