04.5 Losing Power

This afternoon I pulled out on the highway and when the engine hit 2000 RPM it shut down just like it ran out of fuel. I let off the accellerator and then was able to continue on. I tried it 2 or 3 more times and when I accellerate the engine shuts down at 2K RPM. I finally noticed when it shut down it made a huffing noise and then a slight whistle all in the area of the turbo.

Any suggestions as to what is going on?

This is an 04.5 with 77.6K miles on it and it is box stock. I plan to take it to a dealer next week but since I know very little about diesels I would appreciate any info anyone might have. I am working out of town and if anyone knows anything about the dealers in the McAllen, TX, area I would appreciate that information also.

Check all the boots and clamps on intercooler and turbo ,intake ,etc . Sounds like a boost leak for sure .

Lift pump would scare me into checking its status, fuel filter? could have gotten a bad batch and plugged it up till its not delivering what you need at that speed/ rpm, easiest would be boost boots like said above.

I will change the fuel filter tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.

I am ignorant concerning the workings of a diesel and I have seen a lot of posts about lift pumps and they have been mentioned in the answers to my question. Is the lift pump the equivalent of the fuel pump on a gasser or does it serve a different purpose?

Have you driven through any snow or heavy rain lately? If you have check the airfilter.

I am down here in south Texas where it hasn't rained in a while for a while but it is extremely dusty. I just recently changed the air filter and checked that first, it was OK.

Changed the fuel filter today and it seems to have solved the problem. Thanks to everyone for all the advice.
