03 Power Steering Issue - Will Not Go Left!

Hey, I need some assistance.

I'm having power steering issues where I have normal power turning Right but completely 100% manual turning Left. No matter if the truck is straight or at any location. Moving the steering wheel to the Left becomes so difficult the truck is not drivable.

I put the truck on stands and checked the PS fluid level. I also tried to bleed the system by rotating full Left to full Right 20 times (Stop to Stop) with the engine turned off. It appears the steering as full rotation without any obstruction or linkage issue.

I pulled the PS pump thinking that was the issue but I'm having second thoughts after talking with my parts guy. He thinks it is the steering gearbox because the pump is working fine when rotating to the Right. The PS Pump will run me $100 and the Steering Gearbox is about $140.

Please let me know if anyone has had the same issue and what was the fix. I know the PS Pump has been changed before and is not the original. My truck has 260k miles on her so a new Steering Grearbox wouldn’t be the end of the world...

Thanks!

Change the gear box, control valve stuck for sure. Changed a few gear boxes in the past for that problem.

Thanks BigIron70! I should have it tomorrow and will do just that. Looks like a pretty straight forward swap. HP & Reserve Line, Steering Shaft, Pitman Arm, and three bolts. Special tool would only be Pitman Arm Puller.

Yes it's the shuttle valve I believe in the steering box. Same as my 07 a cpl years ago. New steering box fixed it.
I had some metal in the system. Flushed the ps system several times and installed a filter on the return line.

Thanks BigIron 70 and Grit Dog!

I completed the replacement gearbox install last night and the truck is back on the road this morning. I got nervious after reading the material that I recieved with the reman gearbox. It stating that doing the installation it may deploy the driveside airbag. It makes sense with needing to compress the steering colunm.

Glad I steered clear of that one! Ha Ha Corny I Know...

Thanks again!
