03 auto tranny question

My buddy has a 03 auto 4x4 dualie. His son has literally beat the snot out of this truck and I have a chance to pick it up. The auto tranny acts like the govenor is sticking. It wants to start out in second gear instead of first. I also noticed the tranny lines leaking if the line pressure is not what it should be will it affect the operation of the governor. And if it is minor how would this tranny hold up to a 48 FT. enclosed trailer with two cars in it thanks.

Sounds like the govener transducor or solenoid. Should pull what you want fine but be ready to spend money on balljoints, tranny rebuild, and such since his kid beat the snot out of it.

Starting out in 2nd?? Bet 20 bucks the primary drum is toast, seen it many times. Fluid dark and smell burnt?? Does it go into first if u shift it down? Even if its sticking its prob cause of clutch material all in the trans. If you drop the pan would take 30 seconds to see if the trans is toast. Would not buy it without dropping the pan. IF its full of junk then it needs a new trans, if there is just some gunk on the magnet then it might be ok.

Yeah the ball joints are a must I already planned on that it also has the left front u joint out of it. How would I find out what HP the motor is in the truck? Any markings on the motor?

Should be on the driver side of the valve cover cover. If the truck has been beaten, I hope you can get it relatively cheap.

Good chance the tranny is toast. Yea, maybe a transducer and solenoid will get it going. But that "snot treatment" is eventually expensive. At the right price with good body and a need for truck, you should be O'K.
Engine HP is on plate left side of timing cover.

We took the pan of the 48Re and no junk in the pan. Adjusted the bands that were way out of adjustment and drove it. If you put it in reverse then drive it shifts fine but after that when you want to take off it wants to start out in second. I noticed there is a abs light on could that have an affect on tranny if one of the speed sensors is faulty?

Now the plot thickens!!!
ABS light could have affect on tranny. But mainly on upshift to 4th gear. ABS can have many issues unrelated to tranny.

want to take off it wants to start out in second.
On this, it sounds like the transducer and Gov pres solenoid could be curplits especially since nothing in pan.
If taking off in second gear, pull into low, and it should downshift into low. Shift back into driv and it may upshift somewhat normally???? If this happens again the Gov Press Sol and Transducer are suspects.
If clutches haven't been scorched you may be in luck.

Thanks dozer Ive read a bunch of other posts related to the Gov pres. solenoid and transducer going to play with it and probably change that out. The fluid that was in tranny looked like new and did not smell scorched. The pan was clean with no trash so I will check it out. Thanks again
