Went to Blockbuster tonight...............

So me and my gal go into Blockbuster tonight to rent a movie. When I get back out I turn the key and the starter stick. I immediately pop the hood jump out and star trying to yank the positive cables off of the batteries I finally get the second off feels like it took forever it was only cranking for about 45 seconds. I look over to see my girl who knows nothing about engines about 50 feet away I yell what are you doing she says I thought it was gonna blow up lol. any way right then my father calls who is actually calling about a truck he is looking at right down the street. I tell him I could sure use a ride back to the house he gets there and I first ask for a hammer to try and beat the starter to get it to not stick he gives me a ball hitch it doesn't help. So he runs me home. I hop into the 4runner and drive to my starter guy to pick up a new contact for the starter. going back tomorrow after church to pull it and put a new contacts in. So all in all it was a very interesting night. I have two questions though.

First of all is there anyway besides beating a starter to get it to work just to get you home.

My other question is since its a 12 valve could you turn the key to run put the cable on long enough to start it and pull the cable back off? Would you need to wire the shut off solenoid up? I know that nothing would work like gauges lights door locks. But would it run also would it screw with the auto Trans? Im fairly sure you can do it with a 5 speed not sure about the auto. By the way it would just be a limp home type of thing.

thanks for any input guys.

my starter will stick once in a while.. i have been meaning to get new contacts.

i usually just turn the truck off and re-start. the second time the starter doesnt stick and it's a heck of a lot faster than yanking off the battery cables.

If your gonna tow a dis-abled truck with an auto, i have had luck putting the T-case in neutral and leaving the tranny in park. mind you i have only done this with a TH-350/205 combo. if you have ever taken a tranny apart you will see that the oil pump only pumps when it's in gear or running-depending on the tranny.. you will burn up a tranny by having the guts turn without the pump pumping oil.

just to be safe i'd pull the drive shafts off, and tie them to a near by crossmember, since you won't be in gear, they wont be flopping around like a fish out of water. just remember to wrap some tape around your u-joint caps so they dont fall off

Im not sure if its a 12 valve thing but when mine stick the truck keeps trying to start with the key out

Here is somthing from foster truck on why she keeps trying to run

"Fuel solenoid failure almost always begins with worn starter contacts. When a starter sticks on it is caused by the worn contacts arcing and becoming welded together. When this happens the starter back-feeds 12v up through the trigger curcuit to the 70amp fuel solenoid relay. The relay then thinks it getting the power from the ignition switch so closes the relay and energizes the fuel solenoid via the "pull" coil. This is why the engine won't shut off by the key. This "pull" coil is very strong but low resistance so will overheat very quickly if allowed to stay energized. This is what causes the fuel solenoids to burn up."

I have never had my starter hang up on this truck but I do have 3 batteries in my truck with around 4000 amperes of reserve capacity.

Any electrical short could prove to be disastrous for me. As a precaution next to the battery on the passenger’s side fender I have an emergency kit, on the fender panel next to the battery is both a 1/2” X 9/16” open-end wrench and a pair of Klein Cable Cutters stuck with a couple of rare earth magnets.

I have used these to disconnect the battery at a few accident scenes also.

I also have a pair of these for my larger cables I work with.

Depending on the emergency I can either use the wrench and disconnect the battery or I can grab the cutters and with a quick snap sever the battery cable.

I make my own battery cables using welding cable, 1/0 cable has I believe about 1580 strands and I also use other sizes for the charging system.

I have my own pair of crimping dies so I can crimp on my own bronze/lead terminals for custom sizes.

just like rebuilding the drive motors on a portable sawmill minus the solenoid.

You need to take the big positive cable off the starter and have someone hold the key to the start position while you bravely hold it to the starter stud in order for it to work. Then you would have to keep it from arcing on anything else on the way home. My guess would be some quick wraps of electrical tape. After it is running, everything should operate as normal because you have only isolated the hot cable to the starter.
