Went to buy '06 CTD tonight and check engine light on

I went to finish up negotiations on a '06 CTD tonight. The truck was ready for us to test drive when we arrived. The salesman started the truck and right away I saw the check engine light. I asked him about it and he said he didn't think it was the CEL. I told him that I know that it is the CEL and that I didn't want to test drive or buy a brand new truck with 40 miles on it and the CEL on.

Anyway we went inside and the sales manager tells me that there is a recall on some sensors that trip the CEL after jump starting (claimed truck had been sitting for a while and battery was dead). He promised me that it happened on many of there trucks before the recall was done to each truck. He claimed that this truck must have been missed.

The truck with the CEL just happens to have the exact options and color that I'm looking for, there are not many '06's setup like this one.

Does anyone know what to make of this?

Does the sales managers story sound like BS?

Would any of you buy this truck?

I realize it's in warranty but at least let me get out of the lot before having a warranty issue. That truck just gives me a bad feeling.

Thanks for any advice.

The salesman took you for a ride. Not in reality just figuratively!! If you were to buy this vehicle demand 2 new batteries and watch them put the batteries in!

My advice is there is a fly in the ointment and I'd not dare to guess where it is?????

it's a 0514 - low battery temp sensor or something stupid. there are 2 TSB's for it. TONS of posts about it.

test drive it, take it to another dealer to have them cleared,
and if that is what it is - buy it.

it is just a wrong value in a table somewhere some nerd at DC put in.

had it ~3 times first week had my 06

Thanks for the info. I searched the code you provided and found this:

This means that there is a place on the dash to see what code caused the CEL? I don't have much experience with these trucks so I don't know where to look. If so I would like to verify this on the truck and if it is that code sounds like it's no big deal?

Thanks again guys.

you can cycle the key on / off 3 times, leave on 3rd time, should show codes (sometimes) it should show the 0514 in the Odometer.

The dealer will give it a new flash and no more problems. Dont let that code change your mind. My new 06 did the same thing.

Thumbs up

That sounds plausible. The sale`s team will tell you anything to get you to buy the truck, but I would not worry about it. Buy the truck. Just have them update the PCM and clear the code ASAP. It`s not a problem that should stop you from your purchase. My 2 cent worth.

My truck did it also 1 month into ownership. took it in quick fix never has happened again.. I bet they are giving you a great deal on it so I would go for it. but then again it might be nice to wait till the 07 6.7 comes out and give it a try.. will be more spendy though.. good luck.

Thanks for all the replies. Well I've gone to the dark side...... I bought a '07 D-Max last night. I had a Dodge dealer down to Invoice less $1000, less the $5500 incentive, grand total just less than $32K, for a truck with a $42500 MSRP. I thought all was well but when I told them that I was going to trade my Tundra they wouldn't give me anywhere near what it was worth. If I could afford to buy the truck outright without trading my current ride I would have bought it. But I wasn't going to give my Toyota away either. Difference price there $11K.

So I went to GMC and they wanted $14500 plus my trade for a truck optioned similar to the Dodge and within $500 MSRP. That wasn't going to work. I went to another Dodge dealer and they were REALLY high because it was their last 'o6.

Finally I stopped at a Chevy dealer that I had test driven with a few nights ago. Last night was the last day of the year to sell cars in CO (no auto sales on Sunday, it's a law). So these guys pulled out all the stops to make a deal. The 2500 that I ended up with was within a few dollars of the GMC MSRP. I walked out of there with a difference price of $10K even. I drove around all day today and so far I'm very pleased with the GM.

I really liked the Dodge and was very torn between the two. When I realized I could get a Dodge about $4K cheaper than the Chevy I let that make my decision. BUT when the Chevy dealer came to the table with a much better deal than the Dodge I went for it. Some of you may see $11K for the Dodge and $10K for the Chevy and wonder why it’s a “much” better deal. The Dodges have the $5500 rebate and ’07 Chevy has $1K. When you look at the invoices the GM’s are constantly about $4K more than the ’06 Dodges. This dealer claimed to go over $2500 under invoice by using coupons that GM had given them for situation like this. Anyway the way I see it I got $2500 below invoice on the Chevy and another $2K above what the Dodge dealer offered for my trade.

I really like the Allison tranny, at 70mph I'm turning 1800 rpms. Also GM is giving a full powertrain warranty for 5years/100K, Dodge only warranties the Cummins for that long.

Thanks again for the help.

cool. sounds like you are a tough cookie on the car lots.

I agree, don't let them yank your chain, the dodge salesmen are sitting around, going "he'll come crawling back to us tomorrow...."

uh no, i done did got one...

when i went to buy my 06, they told me i had to pay 11.5, i said NO, we agreed on 9.5, he said, NO, some other guy is coming later today to pay us 11.5, so you either pay that, or he gets it.

i paid 9.5 at another dealer 4 hours away and was in a new 06 headed back to the house by midnite (hung out with family for a while)

enjoy it. just a truck.

Projected,
How many people do you know who make an automobile purchase base on: looks good, smells good, buddies will like it, or I can affort the payments?

Well, after all their buddies tell them how nice their ride is the first time they see it, it's over. That person never tells the owner how nice it is again. The owner gets to make the payments for the next "x" years!!!!

You've gone way beyond that. You knew what you were looking for (the absolutes, and the variables) and found it. Now you don't have to be concerned if your buddies like it or not, it suits you. Now, if you drive it with the same diligence until the life is out of it you truly will have a bargain. Enjoy.

Hey thanks a lot 04ctd! After reading your post and researching some on this forum I was not very concerned about the CEL. I talked to the service writer the next morning and he basically backed up what you said about the flash. So that wasn't the issue, the main issue was the trade value. Whether you like Toyotas or not everyone can agree that they hold value as well or better than all other brand.

Like I said above I was 50/50 on which truck to get, so the best deal made my mind up

So far I've found more info on this forum than any other about additives, oil change intervals, ect. I'll still be a lurker here, not sure how much I'll have to post about on a Dodge forum though No I'm just kidding, this is a great forum and I'm a Duramax owner that can admit to really liking the Dodge CTD
