Track Bar/How much play is OK

On my 01, i have a case of the wandering steering. Looking at getting the DSS upgrade for the stabilizer. Was making sure all is well before i bought it and noticed the track bar has some play at the end where it connects to the frame. How much play is OK?? Don't want to buy the DSS stabilizer and it not do nothing.

Thumbs up Dss

Jarhead, Take it from a fellow Coastie and MK, you shouldnt have any movement inyour trac bar, the DSS is a required item. Well worth the cost. You can pick one up thru Rip Rook of Sourceautomotive. Drop me a PM with questions.

If you can see any movement it is too much.

The wandering steering could be caused by wear in steering gear box, might want to adjust it and see if that cures the wander.

I did tighten that scew down on the steering box today. I think that it did help a little. Since I do have some movement on the track bar, should I replace it or if I get the DSS stabilizer, will it take care of it all??

You need to replace the track bar first. If there is still play in the front end then move on to replacing other parts. The track bar keeps the front end inline side to side along with front to back to some degree. A little wear in the track bar goes along way into the truck wandering all over the place.

I would look hard at a stabilizer kit. I had my trac bar replaced. It was $350 . I got took bad. I think I could have put a kit in for that, but I don't know for sure.

Yeah, you could have done the Lukes Link kit on it for less than 100.00.

Jarhead,

The DSS will fix the common loose sector shaft and frame flex problem on these trucks, but it will not fix a track bar problem - two entirely different issues.

We also manufacture a track bar and conversion kit to eliminate the troublesome ball jointed OEM track bar.

Take a look at our website for more info: www.solidsteel.biz

FWIW -
Installed both DSS and Solid Steel's Nonadjustable Trackbar/Mounting bracket - quality products and worth the money. Drive curvy mountain roads and these upgrades definitely helped handling performance on my 7500 pound "sports car". Steering is rock solid and allows me to enjoy the scenery. IMO, definitely worth the money just from the safety & improved handling factors. Purchased mine from Rip Rook - http://www.sourceautomotive.biz/ .
