Temperature Concern

I have been driving my truck for over a week now. Mostly just 55 mph on highway back and forth to work. I got out on the interstate this weekend on a 120 mile trip and cruised along at 65 mph. The whole way there and back my temperature gauge cycled between 150 and 190 degrees. It would take about 30 seconds to climb to 190 then about 3 seconds to drop to 150. It did this continuously. Is this normal or is this a sympton of something. Truck seemed to run well. Never had a diesel before and never seen this on any gas trucks I've had.

Just the thermostat opening and closing. I would replace it. They should find a "happy place" and stay open alittle.

That is completely normal , and a new one is going to do it too, unless it sticks open or closed , don't worry about it. There is/was a different replacement avaialble from cummins, sometimes called the slow opener , which was supposed to hold it at one temperature , but it almost doubles the warmup time, so there is a trade off for not having to watch the gauge cycle.

Mine stays closed then opens once. It may "bounce" alittle after that, but not much. I think the thermostat should be replced if it is constantly opening and closing.

IMHO.

That's because you have a 24 valve, don't know why but this "problem" seems to effect 12 valves more.

Cummins says,

THE COOLING SYSTEM USED ON THE CUMMINS DIESEL ENGINE EQUIPPED VEHICLES PROVIDES THE CAPACITY AND PROTECTION OF THE HIGHER GVWR AND GCWR RATINGS AVAILABLE ON THESE VEHICLES. OWNERS SHOULD BE ADVISED OF THE NORMAL SLOWER WARM UP AND LOWER ENGINE OPERATING TEMPERATURES ASSOCIATED WITH DIESEL ENGINES.

THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE WILL FLUCTUATE ON DIESEL ENGINE EQUIPPED VEHICLES. IT IS INFLUENCED BY VEHICLE LOAD, OUTSIDE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE AND EXTENDED IDLE TIME. THIS FUNCTION IS CONSIDERED NORMAL

Interesting Bill
I wondered why my 12v takes so much longer to reach OT than my 24v did.
I would say atleast 30-40% farther distance in the AM on the drive to work?
