Steering gearbox

when driving down the road I'm sawing at the wheel to keep the truck on the road. I was under the hood looking around and when I turn the steering column shaft the steering wheel turns from 11 oclock to 1 oclock before the output of the gearbox tries to move. I have adjusted the screw on top of the gear box once but didnt do much. So I think I need a new gearbox. My truck is an 02 which one do I need

841md is like a replacement gear. the steering is the same as stock but the internals are much tougher.

i believe the 841mx is valved to reduce the amount of effort it takes to turn the wheels.

i don't know what the 841mr is.

I wondered the same thing when ordering from them. I would suggest calling. They were very easy to deal with and quite knowledgeable about what is right for your truck.

Have you tried to adjust the preload on the input shaft? The FSM actually requires to adjust the preload before the side screw is used for final sdjustment.

Good luck with psc, I'm on my 3rd box within 6 months. I don't really know if it's their boxes or my truck though. Everybody has good luck them and thier customer support is the best in the industry.
My new box does the same thing. I'm already tighten a month old box to keep slop out.
Have you replaced the track bar recently? It seems the steering box and track bar doesn't last long on some trucks, but last a lot longer on some. I haven't figured out the combination yet for longeity.

Good Luck and keep searching the postings for more information.

Yes, adjust the preload which is behind the screw-on cap on the steering input side of the box.

Then adjust the allen screw on top of the box.

On my 01 and my dads 01.5 the preload was snug and just fine. I had previously adjusted the allen screw once just barely 1/4 turn and it didn't seem to do much. So the second time, I adjusted it at least 1/2 turn, maybe 3/4 turn and I then felt a difference.

If you are going to go with a new box, I have heard of a 3.25 turn box unlike our 4.25 turn boxes (lock to lock). The 3.25 turn box will definitely reduce the play and have quicker response. I do not have one myself, but would get the 3.25 turn box if I was going to buy one. Evidently this is the box that came with the 2WD trucks if I remember right.

When I replace the steering box how do you make sure the steering wheel is straight when the tires are straight?

You can adjust that using the drag link within reason. Of course, you should make sure the new box is in the center of it's range first and get it close. The rest of the adjustment can be made with the draglink. I'm no alignment guy, but it's easy to do. Loosen two bolts, turn the sleeve (have to figure out which direction) and tighten back up. Took me a couple trial and error times to get it right, but it's quick and easy.

Exactly

oh and the 841mr is setup for cylinder assist... used for trucks with huge tires and/or rock crawler's. the box has hydraulic outputs on it to power rams that attached to the tie rods. Basically only used off road only.

As to which box to get most would be fine with the 841md, it is a direct replacement for our trucks. It has standard valving and a 20:1 ratio

But for those that want a slighty faster steering you can get either the 841m or the 841mx. Both have 13-16:1 variable ratio, but the 841m has standard valving, and the 841mx has light valving for easier steering.

That being said I bought the 841mx because I wanted the easier steering (at the time PSC didn't make the 841md) I really like the box and have had no problems what so ever in 3 years.

Just be fore warned if you go with the 841mx the stock power steering pump may have a hard time keeping up at low RPM. there are some mods that can be done to the stock pumps to help this or you can buy a high volume pump from PSC.

Hope this helps your decission some....Josh
