steering box

Help with my steering. My truck is tight in the steering no slop. It only has 29K on it and everything is tight no bad front end parts. When you drive down the interstate it acts if the steering box has no center. You must constantly fight it to keep it straight. The only thing I can figure is the steering box. It's aggravating you can't relax and drive. Any suggestions I read all the post and checked about everything????

try backing off of the adjustment some. when these boxes are too tight they will wander like that.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
There is an adjustment procedure for the steering box that does not entail loosing adjustments. Wide tires make it more difficult and incorrect offsets really screws things the wrong way. Good alignment with caster near max might be better alignment specs along with minimum toe in.

PSC Steering Stabizer

Well I called the guys at PSC and told them what my problem was. Now remember this truck only has 30K on it so worn components would be a stretch. I told the guy I thought the steering box must have an internal issue causing the wander. He told me no that it was probably going to be the pitman arm shaft moving side to side causing the play/wander. Well I'd been under the truck numerous times and watched the pitman shaft while someone moved the steering wheel. I never observed any movement. After talking to PSC I decided to watch again only this time I took a screw drive and held it against the shaft as it turned. Only then could I detect side to side movement and it was very minimal but detectable. I jumped on PSC web site and ordered one of their steering stabilizers, 190.00 with shipping. Received it, installed it, very well made, and it really made a difference in the handling of the truck. I recommend it for solving that aggravating wandering. I'll post again after I drive a few more miles.

There was also a tsb for a toe change to help straight line driving.

It's usually not a Toe In or Out problem that causes this, but a Caster problem. Before you opt for the expence, I'd have the alignment checked by someone that know what they are doing..

Not entirely true... Bad toe out will cause your truck to wonder due to each tire is trying to go its own way. The driver will be trying to always bring the truck back to centre if the toe out is bad.

I'm not disagreeing with you about the caster, however toe out will cause wondering as well.

If you wanted, use a certain lug line on the tire, take a measuring tape and measure from one side of the tire to the other. Do this on the front and the rear of the tire. This will at least give you a simple/quick measurement of your toe. I personally can't see a steering box going in 30,000 miles.
