Are there any other options for the spare tire winch other then the single cable winch from Dodge. I am about to buy my second one. Bad thing is is that there is no safety. When the cable goes you don't even know you have lost your spare. $$$$$. I was lucky enough the first time because my wife had to turn around on a dead end and was flagged down by a resident who was standing next to my spare tire. She lost one completely the week before from our 4 door S-10. This time the tire fell off as it was being winched down to change a flat. All three times the cable had frayed. Crappy design.

 

well to help i put a slip style tiedown strap on mine. sometime 2 if i dont need it for a load. it gives you extra safty if the cable does brake. and also it take some of the strain off the cable itsself. i know its a pian to undue when you need it.. but if you ever have lost a spare tire at 70 on the freeway. or have seen it when it happens. its not fun. i watched a toyots pickup almost flip over forwards. . give it a try. my cable has been freyed for over 3 years. and with the straps hasnt broked. but my new spare tire wont fit under there. now it sit in the bed

My winch was replaced under warranty on my '99. To safeguard against this ever happening again,I installed a Master cable lock from Amazon dot.com. I threaded it through the bed crossbrace under the bed and then through the slots in the wheel. Cinch it down,tape up the key slot and your done. maybe $20.00 shipped from Amazon. I'm using the same lock on my '07.
