Spare tire security, anyone?

lost my tire, not stolen
Wish I still had my spare tire so that I could worry about it being stolen.......
**** thing fell off somewhere in the desert (I hope, and not on the freeway) when the steel cable frayed and broke. I never noticed it was gone until the next time I changed the oil and was just doing a quick once over underneath the whole truck. I do a fair amount of off road exploring and after 6 years of bouncing around the cable just frayed and couldn't hold the weight.
Lucky for me I had been too lazy to get rid of the factory rims after I got new rims/tires. So when I got new tires last time I used one of those rims and put the best tire on it and now have a spare that I carry in the bed out of town and AAA in case I get a flat in town without the spare. Kind of looking for a new carrier but in no hurry, probably wait until it drops below 100 degrees here and go to a junkyard, but I also don't want to lose another tire from another worn out cable.
So, everyone just look at the cable from time to time too.
