but is there any way to tell if a truck has a 53 block just by looking at the vin number?

I don't think so. Just crawl under the truck and look, it's easily seen.

I believe I read here that you can see the numbers under the oil filter and under the ip. on either side of the block. You will be looking at the block from under the truck in front of the axle...?...

 

Mines on the left side, under the IP (aprox) just above the pan.

mine is under IP cast in about 1" tall #s can see it real easy hood up no flashlight.side note 151k no problems on a 53 block.not gonna borrow trouble if it starts leaking coolant will deal with.If nobody told you,You would just drive it with no worries thinking better not knowing.Bill
