Reducing In-cab noise?
Reducing In-cab noise?
I am wanting tr reduce some of my in-cap engine noise and road noise, I am planning on lining the firewall, inside doors, and behind the rear seat, but am not sure what to use, I have looked at dynamat but it seems WAY to expensive for this project. Has anyone used anything you can get at a lowes or something? or another product thats not so expensive?
Ebay has something called "fat mat" thats a lot cheaper, anybody used this? Thanks

No disrespect intended....
You might want to try using the search function at the top of the page. Although I do not post here often it is a valuable function that the forum has provided for such information. I have been a member for a while and although I usually do not post information rather use the forum as a information seeking tool which has proven to be an invaluable service since owning my CTD. You also might want to try variations of:
sound
sound deadening
Sound Deadening Material
Sound deadening Cab
sound insulation in cab
Sound Deadening project, Sound deadening
sound proofing material
Which were all titles that I found using the search function in a matter of 15 minutes. FYI, I did use dynamat extreme to do the doors, floor and back wall of my quad cab and have noticable improvement. I was surprised that Dodge would just install a back seat without carpet/ cover/ insulation but, hey as I was once told you bought the truck for the cummins not because its a dodge.
Best of luck

Some have used the roof stuff from the hardware store and I dont doubt that it works to a certain degree but it is not made for that purpose so I dont think it will work as well as some of the others out there that are task specific. I used some dynamat extreme (you are right very expensive). I found a place online that it was fairly reasonable at least for dynamat. I found another product called brown bread. The brownbread has worked very well. Look at the link below for info on their line of products

I think I ended up using about 150sf or so of products. I put a layer on the inside of the outer door skins, inside of the inner skin, and the outside of the inner skin, 2 or 3 layers on the back wall, 2 layers on the rear floor and 2 or 3 layers on the front floor and firewall. I did not do the roof. It did help definitely but it is far from lexus quiet.
I have seen some use a layer of the roofing type lead sheeting as a base layer then put other layers of dyno or the like on top of that with good success.
There are many options out there none of them are cheap some are definitely more expensive than others.
Another option is to look at the source of the noise like these guys did. Have heard that it helps a lot. Some question the value though. I have not used it so I cant say one way or the other on it.

Lets you order by the square foot. Kind of scared to slam my finger in the door now, door sounds alot heavier.

On my off road rig, I use the foil bubble material from building supply. It's foil on both sides and similar to bubble wrap on the inside. It's cheap and would work great for the area behind the rear seat. I used good quality spray adhesive to apply. It would work OK on firewall and tranny hump, but I would not recommend putting it on floorboards under your feet. It might breakdown.
It's not a fancy as the noise mats, but for the $$ it's good. Only down side is that it is about 3/8" thick.

Before jumping in I would check the rubber boots around the floor shifters. You will have to remove them to see if the floor is bent. After going in the ditch one time during a snow storm my in cab noise became louder. I took it back to the dealer (under warranty) but they said the noise was normal. I decided to go looking my self and after removing the boots I found the floor bent and the seal not sealing. I straightened the floor and the metal around the outside of the seal, reinstalled with a little silicone and it was like magic. The noise was reduced back to normal. Its worth a looksee

Ok, I did some searching, and I found that some guys have used "protecto wrap" from menards to do this, I think im gonna go there tomorrow and get some of the stuff. I plan on pulling the front and rear seats and removing the carpet and lining the floorboard and back wall, possibly the roof also, and as much as i can to the firewall. I also ordered some dynamat hood liner insulation (i dont have any) I think a LOT of my noise is coming from my cowl hood as I imagine a lot of the sound is coming thru the cowl and that ends up 5 inches away from the windshield, as the back of the cowl is open and i can practially see the engine thru it.
I've been thinking that last little while about what I could do to sound proof as well. I'm in the middle of installing sills and new cab corners...thinking I'm going to spray a layer of undercoating and then spray some insulation foam in there. As for the doors, I'm going to pack a whole bunch of fiberglass/some sort of material all along the bottom of the doors. Once I start body work on the floor of the cab, then I'll lay down some sort of matting on the floor and behind the seats. I'm also thinking about making some sort of padding to go on my firewall where all my gauge lines and chip harness runs through. Quite a bit of noise comes through there
Good luck on using what you end up getting!

I used B-Quiet and SecondSkin (http://www.secondskinaudio.com) on my sound deadening project. I pulled all of the seats, carpet, moldings, etc and installed sound deadening material everywhere. I should say that the wife thought I lost my mind to spend all the effort on such a project. When it was all said and done my 07 dodge ram diesel is quieter than our E Class Mercedes ... seriously. The wife said “wow, that’s amazing I thought you were nuts but this is great” I found SecondSkin to be the most affordable and a superior product. You should read a bit on their web site and chat forum to determine the best approach. I have read where guys didn’t get the best results, but I can testify that you can make a significant difference if you follow the approach listed on B-Quiet or Second Skins web site.
Well i went to menards today, I found some of the protecto stuff, and it was not at all what i expected, it looked like it wouldnt dampen the noise 1 decible, was bacially styrofoam, plus it was $20 for 36 feet of it at 5 inches wide, i would have to buy about 10 rolls just to do my interior! I think I am gonna get some "fatmat" or "rattle trap" of ebay, and put that in, 2 rolls of 36.5' by 18" should do most of my interior, for $130 shipped, i think the rattle trap is about $200 shipped, I bought some spray foam from menards to do the spaces i cant get the mat in. My dynamat hood liner will be in tomorrow, I am taking pics of this project and will post them when its complete, i gutted my interior today, took about an hour.
For now if anyone has any tips or any better (cheaper for that matter) insulation to use before I order fatmat, let me know.
