Pinging from exhaust after shutting off...

Just wondering if anybody else has this happen with their truck. Everytime I shut it down after driving, I get this intermittant pinging noise which I'm sure is coming from the exhaust. It is just one ping at a time and they are generally around a minute or so apart. It sounds almost like the pipes are getting real hot and then cooling down after I shut the engine off. It does it on long and short trips.. Any ideas???

Are you allowing the temps to cool for a few minutes after driving before shutting it down?
It sounds like the exhaust manifold is cooling and contracting.

It's advisable to allow the engine to run at idle for at least a couple of minutes, especially after a hard run, to allow the turbo to slow down and the oil temps to drop.

I've noticed mine makeing that sound, after shutoff. A sharp metalic ring, kinda like tapping against the drive shaft.
I figured it was just expansion and contraction of the exhaust. May be a weld of the pipe, dunno.

Mine does it too. Just the exhaust system cooling down and contracting in the supports.

Thanks. Just wanted to be sure it wasn't some catastrophic problem that i should take care of. I do let the truck idle a little before shut down but only 30 seconds or so.

Mine is doing it but I have only noticed it since the weather has gotten cold. I've had the truck since 2000 and have never noticed it doing it before. It is a loud popping/pinging sound that sounds like it comes from the passenger side about 30 seconds after I shut off the engine. I only notice it in the mornings when it's cold now because it has started warming into the 60s in the afternoons.

If you want to see something funny, make a center mark above the tailpipe on the body directly in the middle while the exhaust is cold. go for a ride and you see after a it heats up it grows up to an inch especially if you tow and get it real hot.
Danny

Re:Pinging from exhaust after shutting off...

I have been told the pinging noise is more prominent with stainless steal pipe.
